Shoulder Injuries

Recommended Posts

Hi all just looking a bit of advice,

Last weekend (11th Jan) I was playing ice and got hit from behind at centre ice. When I went down the first thing that hit the ice was my shoulder and I ended up leaving the game. The doctor at the rink checked it and it wasn't dislocated and he didn't think there was anything broken but was told to rest it for a few days and if the pain had not reduced to get an xray.

So two weeks have gone by and I'm feeling better, I can still feel my shoulder twinging slightly but its generally not painful anymore.

This a busy weekend ahead of me with regional inline trials, an inline league game and an ice game. Just wondering if there are anyways that I can strap my shoulder up or any things I should do to stop it flaring up again?

There is a brace, but it is by far the most uncofortable thing there is to wear, also depending on which doctor you speak with, some will tell you that it actaually helps a dislocation more than preventing it. I've had my L shoulder surgically rebuilt due to hockey injuries. I still play in an adult league thats not hit and have learned that if I play not to get hurt, I usually do. Go out and test it before the weekend, if you can. If the pain is bearable then skate. Also you may want to check with an orthopedist, and possibly get an MRI, because X-rays wont show any muscular damage.

Best of luck to you and hope its just some soreness leftover

With what you have described there is no way to define exactly what part or parts you have damaged. Ice and compression immediately following the injury, see your Dr. and most often he will recommend assessment by a physiotherapist who will rehab you, and provide a take home care package of stretching, and mobility exercises. My suggestion is to follow this proceedure to avoid re-occuring issues later on, or a more serious result should it happen again. A few weeks of rest ice and treatment can make the difference if it reoccurs possibly requiring surgical repair and a much longer and more painful rehabilitation.

few summers ago i got hit from behind and hit my shoulder in the partition and i didnt break anything it was just muscle bruising and i was out for about 2 weeks... after that i could play but i could feel how my shoulder was weak...i should have just rested it more..but 3 weeks with no hockey...would drive me insane..so i would deep cold my shoulder and play...it still would hurt..but it was bearable..but if you dont have to play. Take some rest and let it heal fully, you dont want to hurt it even more.

Last year i dislocated my collarbone, and then messed up my rotator cuff in a seperate incident later on. I had our national playoffs weekend the weekend after so just bought some large sports strapping tape from a chemist, and i just strapped my shoulder up as best i could, having tape going all over my shoulder, and lots of deep heat. Kinda restricted my movement, but thats what i needed. I made it through the whole weekend without too much incident. If you dont have to play i would rest, but otherwise just strap it up as best you can and get some pain killers down before you start. Good luck at the trials!

Rotator Cuff or Labrum....? both have similar pain and similar restrictions. Self strapping or taping is dangerous, and not advised have a professional do it if you must use that method. NEVER use heat, heat creates inflamation and causes weaknes in the tissue. IF you need heat to mobilize a joint injury try using a small hand towel soaked under the hot water tap only, wring it out, and apply it for about 10 mins (it will no longer feel hot at this point) then stretch and work to increase your ROM slowly. What most people fail to understand is when tissue heals after a strain or a tear the scar tissue that forms is non elastic so working the injury under controled supervision is the safest method in the long run. See your Dr and ask for a refferral to a physio or athletic therapist.
