Open Try Outs

Recommended Posts

I am 22 years old and currently from Hershey, Pennsylvania. I am intersted in any open tryouts that might be in the area. I've had a few leads on some but, they all turned out to be false. Any help in the matter is appreciated.

I was thinking along the lines of something amature but with a structured league. I played ice through high school with a hershey team and then was out of it for 4 years because i enlisted into the marine corps

Hershey Jr. Bears? Didn't they play out of the Delaware Valley?

Yes, they are DVHL.

I would start by looking to the SPHL or by finding an agent to try and score a tryout for you. Are you playing in the Central Penn League at Hershey? If not, it would be a good first step moving back into competitive hockey. There are a lot of former AHL and ECHL guys there and a few with contacts that might help you.

I have never heard of the SPHL or any leagues that play out of Hershey, the only real activity that I know of is just pick up games, at the Hershey Park Areana and Giant Center. I guess I'll just have to start looking around for some leagues and try to make some contacts.

Punky runs the central penn league, their season is just about over so that probably won't help until fall. Stop over at the new hockey shop and ask Bob Wilkie for some help, he's always bragging about his contacts. If you're going to Twin Ponds, turn right at the first stop sign after McDonalds and the shop is half a block down on the left. The Adult leagues at Twin Ponds are just about finished for the fall/winter, spring leagues start in a month or so. If you think you may have the talent to get paid to play, make sure you sign up for the top league.

Ok, since I have been out of the game for the past 4 years, are there any good clinics around the Lancaster/Hershey/Harrisburg area?

Hartley always comes back and runs a camp in the summer, I think it's in York now. You might want to call Larry Courville at the lancaster ice rink, former NHL, AHL, ECHL player that ran the hockey department there last time I checked. I know Wilkie also used to run camps, not sure who is bankrolling him now. Just take everything he says with a grain of salt, I'm not very fond of the guy and I'll leave it at that.

Haven't been there yet but last I heard they still didn't have locker rooms. I'm boycotting that place for a number of reasons that I won't go into here.

It's actually a nice rink, they have about 5 or 6 locker rooms. They have open hockey twice a week. Alot of the local high school teams use that rink for their games, alot better than driving to lancaster or harrisburg but, all in all its a nice rink and the prices aren't too bad. There is also a rumor going around that they are putting up another rink that they are gonna use for leagues and the one they have now for public skating and figure skating.
