Just to clear things up....goals scored on the power play don't count as a + or a - for any of the players on the ice.

In spite of the Oiler's strategy, Gretzky is still at #4 for career +/-. I find that amazing, especially considering his many years in LA and NYC. He dominates the record books like no other athlete in any sport as far as I can tell. And his combination of ability, creativity and class is just so rare, especially in today's sports world.

I love that he achieved so much with so few obvious physical gifts. I remember an SI profile of him from when I was young. In a pre-season Oilers training camp, the team was put through a battery of tests. Gretzky was at or near the bottom in just about every category. It wasn't that he didn't work out; he was just a skinny guy with average physiology. He was tested in stuff like bench press, leg press, lung capacity, etc. The one that surprised me the most was EYESIGHT. No unique strength, no unique speed, mediocre eyes, and yet...

Those of us old enough to have seen him play in his prime are so, so lucky.
