Strongest Holder/Skate

Recommended Posts

Hoping for some advice. I'm a big guy, 6'1" and 3 bills and wear a 12.5 EE or 4E shoe. I haven't been on the ice in about 5 years. Last time I played was in college (beer league) and I was wearing 652 tacks (circa 2000) size 11E, this pair: http://di1.shopping.com/images1/pi/bb/9c/6...177x150-0-0.jpg

Anyhow, last time I played my fat a$$ actually bent the prolite 3 holder at the heel. My dad (jack of all trades) was able to bend it back, drilled two holes in it and filled it with epoxy. It was ghetto, but they actually worked fine for the rest of the season.

So my question is, what skate/holder would you recommend for me? Is there a stock or after market holder that is super strong? I was thinking about looking into the Graf 709's in an extra wide width for my wide, fat feet. Right now I'm just looking for something to skate on with my sons mini-mites team. Once I get healthier I'll be looking into joining a rec league. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd recommend LS2. I'm confident that this is the stiffest and strongest holder on the market... BUT I don't feel that you are limited to LS2, pretty much any holder that isn't PL3 should be strong enough.

+1 I'm a bit taller (6'3") and a bit heavier (315ish) and I use the LS2 on my skates and have never had any issues with breakage...my skates cry sometimes (make a little creaking when I first change the blades), but other than that I've not had any issues.

I'm 5'11 and 150lbs. Please don't hit me on the ice. :P

I'd go for a much stiffer skate than the 652's that you had. Definitely choose top of the line based on your weight.

The 709s could work, but have you tried them on? What are you willing to spend for a pair of skates? I know the current lines are going or about to go on deep discount to make room for new inventory this spring. You could probably find a higher end pair of skates for a decent price these coming weeks. I've got a guy on my team who is an ex college FB player..He's about 6-2 295lbs.. Wears an Easton Synergy skate. They've held up quite nicely for him. I suppose you can look around and see what works best for you..Or you could email JR and have him get you fitted. You could be a candidate for the Bauer Flexlite skates...

The 709 is a good choice but I would change the blade system to either the Mission Pitch 3 (if you can find them), or the CCM/RBK E-blade.

I feel those two are overall the most durable holders and runners on the major market.

The Bauer LS2 has a durable holder but brittle steel, so it would be my third choice.

The Cobra Holder is fair but it's steel has even more problems then the LS2.

BTW - Don't be scared away by the new CCM/RBK E-blade holder. It's much stronger then it's predecessors the Prolite 3! :)

+1 on getting fitted - sorry my last comment was so useless - I hit post too early and didn't have time to change it.

One of my buddies is wearing an Easton Synergy as well. He's pretty heavy (Around 260/270) and it has held up for a season and a half of hockey 2 nights a week for him. They are scuffed up on the outside pretty bad, and the blades click every once in awhile. He was complaining about the skate width though. If the 709's is what your after, maybe try the G9's if you can find them too.

Thanks for all the input guys. I currently live in Houston, and quality hockey shops are pretty much non-existent. I'll have to wait until I visit back home (Michigan) to really try on a bunch of different pairs. I'm willing to spend top of the line money to finally have a comfortable pair of strong/sturdy skates. My favorite pair I've ever owned were Bauer Comps, but even those killed my feet. My dad always told me that hockey skates will hurt your feet, so I always thought it was normal and never complained. I love the looks of the one95's and the new flexlites... maybe I'll see about trying some of those on this summer. I imagine I'll have to have some custom work done in order to get them to fit my wide feet.

Ditch the stock footbeds and get one of the Graf/Superfeed pre-molded footbeds put in the skate as well. I'd put them in before trying on the skate though so you can get a feel volume-wise as to how they'd fit. I've got a pair of Nike Bauer One55s and Flexlite 18s both with custom heat moldable footbeds and my feet have not hurt since. No different than wearing shoes IMO.

It wouldn't hurt to lose some weight either

Thus the line in my original post about joining a beer league when I get healthier. I'm not overlooking that aspect of the problem.

I'm guessing those old ICM holders are not as robust as they once were. Do not let him go on a wild goose chase for ICM holders that are nearing the end of their shelf life.
