MN State Hockey Tourney

Recommended Posts

I see 11,000 showed up for the battle between Jefferson and Edina with Edina winning 5-0...I was out of town for business and not able to watch the game. Did anyone make it? Is Edina that good? I know their best player has not played all season due to a knee injury suffered in football.

Didn't see the game last night--had a game of my own to play--but have watched Edina a bit this year. Anders Lee is unbelievable, and Everson is quite good, too. Lack of size at D is the only thing that will hold them back, but I think they can take the title this year.

Too bad Lee is going to Notre Dame. He would have been great at the U of M. Reminds me of Stoa--a big skilled guy.

Yeah, I think Don Lucia missed the boat on Lee. The Gophers need big, fast forwards, not smurfs like White or Sacchetti. They've got a lot of size coming in next year defensively, but the Gophers should have recruited Edina's entire 1st line.

Mn High School hockey coaches now vote to seed 4 of the 8 teams in the state AA tourney and 4 of 8 in A tourney (small schools). This helps build a bracket that is more likely to yield a true champion. In the past we often watched the championship on day 1, with seeding we typically see the 2 best teams in the "Ship" on saturday.

The Jefferson/Edina game in the sectional finals could have also been a great state title game..I dont think Apple Valley or Duluth East are better than Jefferson. Eden Prairie...yeah they are tough

As a fan of high school hockey, and hockey in general, Minnesota sounds like a dream for as seriously as its taken.

they dont call this the state of hockey for no reason.

today at work we filled out brackets for both the A and AA tournaments; no, I'm totally not kidding :P

AA represents schools with populations greater than about 1400 (or close to it not totally sure on the number) and does represent the best teams in the state. Some Class A sized schools opt to play AA for competition reasons. Last year the winner of AA had a school population of 365! Roseau.

Roseau lost in semi-finals last year to Hill-Murray, the eventual state champ. Roseau also lost in consolations as well...So 2 losses for them last year at state. Great team tho! Their star defenseman, Ness was drafted by the Islanders. They did win it all a few years back tho. Warroad can compete with all of the AA teams as well...How many goals does that kid from Little Falls have this year????

Yeah my bad i was thinking of the previous year. I think it slipped my mind because Roseau was basically given the title prior to the tourney last year.

Breck is on TV right now. They have become a powerhouse in Class A since Peter Mueller and Blake Wheeler laced em up for the Mustangs.

What a game by Hanowski, five goals, and from what I understand the all time scoring leader in MN hockey history.

Yeah, he's a pretty electrifying player. He's big (6-2 200lbs) but has a really nice scoring touch.

There is certainly a nice crop of "bigger" MN kids this year with guys like Anders Lee and Nick Leddy. Budish would be in the equation if he had not torn his ACL in football. He's 6-4 225lbs.

St Cloud State. He was ranked #45 on midterm rankings from what I can see, and I imagine his stock will go up. Too bad Risebrough traded our 2nd round pick, as he might be good pickup early in the 2nd.

Lucia seems to like "smurf" players who peak in HS. I myself prefer the bigger kids like Stoa who can work the corners and score..Unlike Patrick White :)

Eh, I haven't followed the Goofs for very long. They haven't been that great the past few years enough to really want to watch them. I secretly root for Mankato as I transferred from the U down there and got my degree.

It will be interesting to see what happens if and when Lucia is gone...Souhan had an article about that today. I wonder what would happen if the U started bringing in players that maybe didn't have top end talent and would stick around for more than a season or two?

Lucia needs to bring in more kids like Bickel (even tho he went pro) because they offer athleticism AND size. You cannot teach someone to be 6-3 215lbs. The Gophs always have talent but they need to look at developmental potential and not just overrated kids who peaked at the USNDT progam or the USHL. I do like the size of guys the have committed recently. Guys like Mark Alt (Dad was all-pro OL for Chiefs) and Zach Budish or Nick Leddy. I do wish they would have recruited Anders Lee harder. He's a great all-around athlete with size like Okposo. There is a reason why 5-9 160lb guys get drafted later on than the bigger kids. Guys like Theo Fleury etc are far and few between. That being said, SCSU recruited the two best scorers in the state this season. The kid from St. Francis is pretty damned good too.

There is a reason why Hill-Murray won the title last year

Eden Prairie beats Hill-Murray 3-2 in OT. Hats off to both teams. HM has come a long way since having 4 seniors booted off squad at beginning of season. They will be a force to contend with in future. A lot of sophs on that team.

Lechner should be metro coach of year IMO. Hill-Murray beat Phil Housley's tough Stillwater squad to advance.

Looks like GWG is under review- I'd hate to be the referee right now

Goal stands...EP wins 3-2

I like EP's team matching red\black NBH 4 rolls and HM's matching black\kelly gree Torspo gloves

EP has a bunch of guys in the Mission NME skates

Lucia, along with the whole WCHA, is becoming a victim of its own success. The kids the WCHA is pumping into the NHL are tearing it up. Just think off the top of one's head:

Vanek, Parise, Wheeler, Kessel, Zajac. And then you add Minnesota kids who don't go through college like Langenbrunner. My word, how do you keep a college program successful when half the kids on the team are drafted and have seen their teammates not only getting ice time in the NHL, but succeeding wildly--topping the scoring lists, captaining teams?

It's great fun to watch this success, but it's too bad from the WCHA/NCAA perspective.
