Youth Skates

Recommended Posts

My son who is almost 7 has out grown his current skates, and needs new ones. I was wondering if it's okay to jump up a whole size so that he'll have room to grow into them or do most parents just get them the next half size up. We'll be trying on the skates before buying. I'm just wondering how much room to look for. Thanks

in my experience if the kid's completely outgrown a cetrain size (meaning toes are cramped in the toe cup) then going up by a full size is the way to go - should carry him/her through the season (especially if the new skate is bought at the beginning of the season - sometimes before the try-outs so that they could get comfortable in it - break it in at least a little)

BTW lower to mid end youth models don't even come in half sizes

Wrong

jr rbk 3k and up come in half sizes as do most of there youth skates once you get above size 10. Meaning 10.5 and up Same thing for CCM vectors. Eastons also generally start half sizes at 10 also. Bauers do have sizes starting in youth at size 10.5 on most skates as well and I believe do E widths somewhere around there as well.

As for me I am obsessed with my sons skate comfort and skating so I will buy half sizes. He is 3 and just wearing a 9Y now so I have to make do I was able to find a solution by switching brands for this round but will be going back to CCM shortly as they run slightly bigger then Eastons. He hangs with the 5 year olds and out sktes some though so it appears to be working.

Buy him what fits...can't tell that until you take him to the store and have him fitted. Should be room for one finger maximum behind his heel when his toes are just touching the toe caps.

actually, he's right. Most of the lower end skates only come in full sizes for youth. Just to name a few: Easton Synergy 50 and Stealth S1... Bauer Vapor IX and One05... CCM SK01 and SK02... only come in full sizes for youth.

As for my 5 year old, I waited until he was at the very end of his 10.5's and then bumped up to 11.5's. Some great deals out there right now on the bauer vapor line.

He said lower to middle. I pointed out that except for the lowest models in each line which is what you are referring to almost all manu make .5 sizes.

Bauer Vapor XII is clearly a lower model its one step up from the bottom and comes in .5 sizes above 10 as do all models above and they do wide. One35 and above. One 35 is a lower end model last time I checked. 70.00 skate.

Reebok, The entire Reebok line starting with the Reebok 1k which is the lowest model made and up comes in .5 sizes.

Easton model S3 and up which is one of their lowest model does .5 sizes. SY50? seriously? you are refering to a 25 to 35 dollar skate as a reference. Thats the absolute base line barely a skate.

CCM Vector 3 and up uses .5 sizes. That is clearly a lower end model.

Yes the absolute entry level skates dont come in .5 sizes. However as i stated most makers offer plenty of lower to mid level skates in .5 sizes for youths and jrs above size 10Y

Thanks for all the tips. I like the one-finger rule. I'll be looking for a skate in E or Wide for his duck feet.

If he has duck feet like my son look at the reebok line up, or an older model CCM Tack boot. If you go Bauer you will likely need to go wide. Reebok and CCM(depending on model) maybe not. Reebok boot is based of the old tack model and I found even in the youth skates its a wider flat arch boot with good volume. Son wears wide to extra wide shoes and wears a regular in reeboks. He cant wear Bauer in standard width.

Good deal if there his size. Being 7 I think there to small though.
