Skate sharpening:Contour.. quick question.

Recommended Posts

A couple months back I got some Nike Flexlite 12s off of a member here. They were worn for one season and the blade itself was in really good condition.. I've skated on them once and found that my foot didn't stay straight on the ice and would somewhat wobble as I glided or turned corners or I would lose my edge really easily.

Then I compared my old skates (white Nikes) and its edge to the used skates I got and the contours were completely different.

Old skates had a signficantly smaller contour and the newer used had a fairly large contour.

I got my old pair used as well.. but the edge was perfect and never really had any problems with my foot staying straight or losing an edge turning corners and what not.

Question is.. how do I get my 'new' skates sharpened to compare to the contour of the old skates? Like what do I tell the person at the LHS sharpening my skates? Sorry if I sound like a newbie. When I was younger, one of the parents on our team would just take the whole teams skates to the LHS a day or two before games so I never really worried about it. I stopped playing hockey for a bit and didn't really think too much about sharpening my skates and what not. I just take them and the guy working does them.

Since you're going with different holders and skates, the profile and ROH that you liked on the old skates may not be what you wind up liking on the new ones. You and your sharpener should experiment until you find what works on the new skates.
