Darkbyte 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2009 The balance board is good for ankle strenght if you have very very very weak ankles (i.e. ankles giving way when walking/very tired) or are undergoing rehabilitation. Personally, I would say that skating is a better ankle strengthener. Seeing as we can all skate, doing specific ankle exercises would be even better than using a balance board if you find you are lacking in that department.Balance training is worthwhile, and squats on a balance board really hurt. There are two types of balance board, the roller type (180 degree movement) and the wobble type (360 degree movement). The wobble type is the harder of the two, however, you dont learn to adjust your balance when doing larger movements. Id almost say wobble = static balance, roller = dynamic balance. If I were to buy only one type of balance board, I would buy the wobble type, because its "harder" when doing 2 legged and 1 legged squats.Im not very good at DIY, so I purchased an Indoboard package (roller and cushion). I dont use it as often as I should, but its a good thing to have. I used it heavily when I was learning to skate (my balance is appauling).If you get a balance board, dont forget to do exercises with your eyes closed and looking from side to side. They can tell you what to do (intensity), how to do it (proper technique) and when to do it (frequency) based on your goals. It is the most effcient way of moving foward fitness/strength wise.Second: A great book which I read 2-3 times a year... Complete Conditioning for Hockey by Peter Twist. skeeter14 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2011 Sorry for bumping an old topic, but my Fiancee picked me up a slide board for my birthday recently, and I had a (potentially) crazy idea and was looking for feedback. Would there be any additional benefit to me wearing my gear while doing the workout (sans skates obviously)?a little background, I had three "massive" abdominal hernia's that were repaired about 6 months ago, and I am finally able to start getting back into shape, specifically for a tournament in January. I need to lose ideally 20-40lbs by then, and was wondering if there was any added benefit to wearing my gear when doing this work out over just regular shorts and shirt.Thanks in advance!
