Lacrosse goalie

Recommended Posts

I have never really watched a lacrosse game, but am doing so right now, Duke vs Virgina. I am enjoying the game and think it would be fun as hell to play, but am confounded by the goalie-situation. They put a guy in a huge net, give him practically no gear and expect him to stop some very fast shots. Why can't lax goalies at least have hockey-style goalie leg pads? Not as big of course, and make them a shape that allows the wearer to move around easily enough. Today, it looked like every shot fired low at the goalie's skinny unprotected shins went into the net. The score is now in double digits. No sport that has a player whose sole job it is to guard the net should go into double digits assuming both teams are evenly matched. Any lax players out there? Opinions?

Handball gets double digit scores ;)

Every sport has different levels of scores. In my opinion it helps to differentiate between them.

Also, i just looked on lacrosse monkey, they do sell what look a bit like soccer shinpads listed under goalie equipment.

I play goal in box lacrosse. I have leg pads, pants, chest protector, goalie gloves, and an over sized stick. No way I'd do the field lacrosse thing.

I know lax goalies who have used ice hockey shin guards, which would work well. There is a kind of mentality among lax goalies that leg protection is some sort of pansy thing, which is ridiculous.

My leg pads have a plastic flap at the bottom that covers the top of my foot. Nothing like taking a shot off an unprotected toe. Last time I had to have my toe nail pierced to relieve the blood that was forming underneath.

Sounds pretty painful... That would make me want to consider something like some steel capped dunlop volleys

It is actually quite a relief when the pressure under the nail is relieved. Taking a bounce shot in the balls like Bond being tortured in Casino Royale is more painful.

I'm starting to think that a shooter tutor thing or smaller harder to hit goal would really be best for lacrosse, the unprotected goalie who just gets shelled never stuck me as a good idea either.

I was a lacrosse goalie for a couple years, played select level and High school varsity, it's not as bad as it looks. A lot of goalies wear padded shorts that you can't see under their game shorts.

for field the goalies often have to sprint halfway up the field, pads would make it hard to do that as fast. but you are right, it's hella fun to play. even not in a game, if you get a few guys out to a field with sticks and spitz, maybe something to shoot at, you could do that for hours.

Check out box lacrosse goalies. They are MONSTERS with all those pads.

Heres a good comparison.

okay now, the box lacrosse goalie equip and small net looks like quite challenging to score against. Thanks for posting comparison in field vs. box equip. I think one poster mentioned that the lack of protection for field goalies is a macho thing. I can understand that. I'm sure there is also tradition involved.

I actually could have played lax as a spring sport in school in school way back in the day, but choose to run track instead. Probably better that I ran track, as I have no doubt that if I had played lax I would have loved it and would still be addicted to it today. My addiction to hockey is already enough of a distraction. lol

oh man, that is a big-ass goalie.

For players out there who have played both field and box, which is more fun? And why?

imo field is alot more fun. The playing surface is alot bigger and there's alot more running involved. In box it's often that as soon as you get the ball there's someone on you crosschecking you and slashing you but with field there's a lot more room to make a move and take your time. It seems that most people prefer field over box, at least from the people i've talked to.
