going back to roller...

Recommended Posts

i've only been playing ice for the last 3 years and i plan on playing some inline this summer. i used to wear size 9.5 in mission inline skates but i haven't bought inline skates in quite some time (mission rpm's were the last inline skate i bought). i also wear a size 8 in ccm ice skates.

1) have sizes of mission skates changed at all in the last few years?

2) i'm also considering giving tour skates a shot if they fit me right. what is the difference between the code carbon and the code carbon pro?

thanks.

I had a pair of 9 yr old Mission Proto VSI skates that I just retired! amazing skate. SO i decided to buy the Mission Lieutenant skates to replace them, anyways they

are the worst skate i've ever put on my feet, period!! Mission has re-released the PROTO Vsi again for 2009 complete with the new vanguard chassis bolted on. So I sold the Lieutenants and picked up the VSi's again! I am in love all over again.. lol.. Its the best fitting skate i've ever had right out of the box. I never baked them and never got any blisters from them.

Tour makes a good skate as well, but they run a little wide, so if you have a narrow foot like myself they will feel like pontoons on your foot..

brentdz, what did you not like about the lieutenants? they seemed to have gotten good reviews. thanks for the info on the tours. i've read several places that say they are for wider feet and i have narrow feet so i think i'll stick with missions.

They just didn't fit my foot anywhere near as well as my old VSi's did.. I had them baked before i used them, but still ended up with two large painful blisters on my left foot, one on the inside of the ankle bone and the other on inside of the heel bone. my right foot had a big blister on the outside of the ankle.. I've heard the 09 black series mission skates solider, commander and Boss are more comfortable then the 08 syndicate line by a longshot. For me i think my ankle bone is too big for those skates causing my heel not to be able to lock into place. I felt like I had a gap between my heel and the back of the skate.. I wear a size 11 shoe and a 10.5 mission skate fits me perfectly..

as for the Tours, I bought a 2004 beemer skate because i wanted to try out the hummer frame. My foot swam in them width wise, causing me to have no stability in them at all. I just received the 2009 VSI's in the mail 2 days ago.. had them baked, they fit exactly like my 2000 vsi's.. I will be testing them out on Wednesday in my first game of the season on indoor sportcourt. Ill let you know how they feel..

I had a pair of Code Carbons and hated them.

I had them baked and they seemed to fit excellently, but after an hour skating in them it seemed that my foot was moving around too much.... they are sized correctly for my foot and I was very excited about skating in them. Other issue is that with the Hummer set up, it feels like your constantly falling backwards.... Plus the tongue on the Codes is wayyyy stiff and prevents forward flex.

Had mission VSI's way back in the day and they fit super good.

Anyway, it really is all about preference.... If you like your ice boots, then you can add a frame onto them. I have a sprung frame that I am about to mount on my Grafs. Ther is a HUGE thread on Sprung skates here..... my god, I sound like a convert :)

i've decided to buy the re-issue proto vsi's. at first i wasn't too crazy about paying $300 for old technology, but at least i am getting peace of mind.

Good choice

I just ordered a pair of the Reissued Wicked Lights - had them back in the day and were possibly the best skate I've had for roller to date. I have the 09 Mission Boss Blacks....not too fussy on them at all.

Gonna just stick the Mag chassis on the Wicked Lights when they arrive.

ive always heard good things about the wicked lights too but never tried them. what are the advantages of the wicked lights over the proto vsi (since the wl's cost $100 more)?

Just played my first game with the new re-issued Proto VSi's... Skate felt great..I haven't had them baked yet but so far no new blisters. A little pain from the existing blisters that i got from the lieutenants but that was to be expected. The skate puts you on your toes a bit more then with the Lieutenants, which I am used to from having the old VSi's with the Hi-lo frame. I ditched the Labeda wheels and abec9 bearings that came with the skate and slapped on the RR Hornets and my existing Ceramic bearings. So Far so good, Not bad for 300 bucks.. My old skates did come with a superfeet footbed, the new ones come with a cheap black footbed, thats the only difference..

Trust me it's $100 well spent. The originals were possibly the best roller boot I've ever owned, and it's a testament to how much of a legend it was to reissue both the WL and the VSI.

It's a lighter and stiffer boot than the VSI due to it being made of the Carbon like material - and it's solid. Took many a slapshot to the boot and didn't feel much, if any pain or shock from it.

Best to get either boot baked however...but if I were you I'd defo stump up the extra cash for the WL's you will not be disappointed, it was the top of the range for a reason back in the day and a boot many people would have killed for to get their hands on - the fact it's out again is a godsend!

There's a thread on this forum you should have a glance at http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index...showtopic=44955

Just noticed on hockey giant - buy the WL's and get a pair of Mission Wicked Light ice skates fre....good deal http://www.hockeygiant.com/20090422hg.html

I've been itching to buy a pair of the Wicked Lights. I just can't get myself to pull the trigger. I really loved those skates. I have no need for the Wicked Ice skates so the promo HG is running right now doesn't appeal to me.

I'd still get the deal, and why not convert the Wicked Ice - pretty sure if you whacked a hi-lo and stick them on ebay you would definately attract more interest for sure - I know if I saw a pair of the Wicked Ice already converted I'd do a second look....sure you have to outlay some cash on the frames but you'd make the cash back down the line.

The skates are placed in an oven and heated for several minutes and then are laced tightly on your feet. Once heated the boot will form-fit to your feet giving a custom ft which will aide greatly in break-in.

There are special ovens designed to do this. You can do it at home in a convection oven, but I'd go to the LHS to have it done correctly.
