Hey guys, thought I'd start this general poll, I know its not very scientific or the most accurate poll around, but am very curious to see the results. I know that I wasn't able to put in every helmet or more detailed choices but this was the best I could do using the poll. Please vote honestly and if something you wanna choice isn't available vote for the next best result. Please no flame wars bashing other helmets, VN vs EPP, or how one helmet may be protective but is ugly etc. Just some honest discussion regarding their safety.

Also, you may select more than one if you have used more than on helmet. Please only vote if you have used a particular helmet for more than a few months.

In the poll VN= Vinyl Nitrate and your helmet has this if it is lined with a softer spongy material. You have an EPP based helmet if your helmet has a semi-hard black styrofoam type material with small padded inserts attached.

If you vote that you have had significant head trauma with or without a head injury please share the incident/story!

Thanks and I hope this isn't against any of the forums rules.

Edit: Please vote in blank voting spots if you do not have a helmet listed in that particular group. Otherwise you will not be able to register your vote.

I get an error when I try to vote, I think it's because I didn't sele ct one in the second poll. But Bauer EPP, no major hits, no injury and CCM EPP, a few major hits, and no injuries for me.

Sorry about that. I had that too. So I put in my reallly really old Jofa helmet in as other for the second poll. Is there any other way to set it up so you don't have to vote in both?

had the same problem in the voting... holy jumping... thats a lot of choices for a GENERAL POLL

Just shuffled some of the things down to the third poll and inserted blank spots for people to cast a vote in if they don't have a helmet in that group. That should fix it.

And yea I wanted to be kinda thourough. Woulda been nice to be able to do a linear poll where you pick your helmet, then if you had a head injury then if you had any trauma but that wasn't an option.

Also, the main reason I thought to conduct this was due to the discussions over EPP vs VN and also because I have read many articles stating that hockey helmets are as safe as the helmets used in other sports. So that got me thinking and figured I'd throw up a poll thread :)

Voting isn't working for me either. Lots of options!

Make sure you fill in 'blank voting spots' for the polls that you don't choose a helmet in. Its the last choice in each poll

Man, I wish I still had this helmet for a picture. In 2006 I got hit in the ear wearing some kind of Bauer helmet and Jofa cage and the ear guard completely broke off. No serious injury besides a little bit of pain for a few days, but Bauer ended up picking up the tab for a Reebok 8K. They took the helmet back though. It was only two or three weeks old at the time.

As someone that has had head injuries and likes to switch helmets up often i think i'm perfect for this thread.

My first major incident was with one of the older CCM helmets, i forget the model number but it was their top helmet around 2001-2002ish. I always got a pain in the back of my head with this helmet because of the support in the back, it was never really comfortable and i cursed it every day.

Next i switched to a nike 0004 and really liked how it felt. I was in my last year bantam with this one so i was one of the larger kids, didn't really have to worry too much about head protection...but my opponent did, lol.

I switched next to a bauer 4000 just because they didn't make the nikes anymore. It was in this helmet i had my first concussion. Stubborn, i kept wearing it and got 2 more the following year, one not-so-bad, one pretty bad. I switched to a mission intake for reffing but once during a tryout i forgot my intake and had to use my 4000. It was in the tryout i got another concussion. It was then that i gave up playing any competitive hockey in fear of actually causing serious damage to my melon and now i mostly just referee and play pick-up hockey. During a face-off once both wingers came in and took the feet from under me, my head was the first thing to hit the ice and i thought for sure it was lights out. I was amazed when i actually got up and was perfectly fine, kudos to mission on that headlock piece, it worked great. It's still not easy though as i got a minor concussion wearing my intake last year when i got caught just inside the blue line and cushioned the check of a player. I switched to an easton s17 earlier this year because the front pad of my intake was wearing out. So far things have been alright but i haven't taken a large hit with it so i'm not sure it. It's the most comfortable helmet i've ever worn so hopefully that comfort translates into protection.

Thats a pretty crazy series of events. Sorry to hear about your concussions. The most shocking part was the recurring concussions you had with the 4000. Do you think it was the helmet or just the circumstance? Your post goes to show the importance of a good helmet and the importance of getting a new helmet after suffering a concussion in the one you own. Thanks for sharing
