Removing spray paint on sticks

Recommended Posts

Just got a pro return ville leino stick off eBay- it's an easton SE16 with the lower portion of the shaft sprayed black to help hide the puck more.

I was planning on using some pretty strong paint thinner to remove the black spray paint... Has anyone here used paint thinner on their stick to remove previously applied spray paint without damaging the paint work on the stick? I just dont wanna ruin the stick or have the chrome wash off after applying the thinner since my goal is only to remove the black paint.

No big deal if it can't be done... Just figured I'd attempt to ask on here first.

I would assume it will remove the paint on the stick too. Paint thinner isn't exactly selective about what paint its going to remove.

all right I'll have to go to my local hardware store and ask for something weak in terms of thinner.

Thanks for the tips though. I'll update the thread once this has been tried. ;-x

I just cleaned off spray paint from and old stick. Came out pretty darn nice too.

I used brake cleaner. It worked pretty well

BUT

It took off a little of the graphics that were left over on the stick.

So, if you go with the brake cleaner idea, please be warned.

If you don't want to take the chance with the thinner I've just scraped the paint off with my thumbnail and it works good.Just more time consuming,+you don't have to worry about thinner damage.

I've tried using paint thinner to get the spray paint off my pro stock ONE95 but with no luck.

Mineral salts? I got caught by the cops spray painting and they made me remove it, my mom got me a bottle of mineral salts or something close to that name took the spray paint off, why not try it, if you screw it up you can always respray it black.

I'ma try diluting my thinner a bit & I'm gunna try the mineral salt idea.

Not that I don't like the 'scraping the paint off with your thumb' idea ;-p Sore thumbs suck! Get em all the time from playing my xbox 360

I had a buddy in Junior who used to use Carborator (sp? car) cleaner and it took the spray paint right off, but left the stick graphics as they were originally. Never tried it but some other guys did and it worked. Just my $.02

All - Right fellas. I finally was able to get a hold of some Mineral spirits & it worked like a charm. Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this --thread.

- Quick pix -

Before any mineral spirits was applied: 520x.jpg

After mineral spirits was applied:

- off topic a bit... Coming from using a zetterberg/malkin mid-heel curve... This was my first toe curve I've ever picked up. The picture does no justice to it but I assure you... It is a wicked toe curve... o.O kinda reminds me of spezza's "hook" like toe lol -.-

Again, thanks for all the help.

No way ! lol! Thanks for the good deal boss.

I tried the stick out today.. pretty hard to get use to but the slap shots are nasty hard since the flex is real stiff! It's just the right height for me too believe it or not. No cutting or adding a BUTT end was necessary.

I'll keep watch for the hossa stick.

Again, thanks for the good deal and fast shipping & thanks for leaving me feed back ... I still need 4 or 5 bastards that haven't left me squat for feedback...

I should mention that the paint didn't come off easy even with mineral spirits. I actually had to rub pretty hard to get it off... Had a full days worth of sore fingers =P.

I used a plain old Mechanic's Work-shop rag & applied mineral spirits on that. Went through trial and error since I was trying to be careful: Paper towels rip too easily especially since this stick has a grip coat, cotton ball swabs did jack shit. It just turned the bottom part of the stick into some furry thing.

so.... some old work-shop rag did the trick.

One last thing. I tried paint thinner on a broken se16 stick that is about to become a tapered shaft...I spray painted the bottom of the stick black with the typical local hard-ware spray paint & waited for it to dry.

The paint thinner I tried was meant for MODEL-PAINT removal off of plastic scaled models. I had some laying around since this is my other hobby.

This TESTOR's PAINT THINNER ( Model -paint thinner ) is not as strong as the paint thinner you'd buy at any other store. This paint thinner is only obtainable through a hobby shop.

Anyway- I had to rub MUCH harder for a Greater period of time to get the black paint off the broken se16 stick I tested this on. It came out good, too. The graphics from the shaft were still in tact. There was just a lot more elbow grease needed.... A LOT MORE... So Less-Strong paint thinners work & mineral spirits works...

But I'd recommend the Mineral spirits.
