Question for Velocity steel owners and sellers? Equipment trainers?

Recommended Posts

Question for Velocity steel owners, How do you keep the mirror finish? All the pro stock steel that I have seen from the Red wings always still has that mirror finish while I have to stone my blades to deburr edges and the finish is completely gone. What do the red wing trainers do after they sharpen the players skates so the steel isnt scratched by the stone??? I am getting new skates soon so new and different size velocity steel will go on them. Any tips for keeping them looking shiny ?Is there a stone out there that wont hurt the finish?? Is there a certain polish I can use to keep them looking like a mirror? Any help from experts is greatly appreciated thanks

They are going to scratch a little when deburring but if you tilt your stone 1-2-degrees you wont be scuffing up the whole side. Tipping the stone tunes the tips of the edges, so it's a good practice anyway. I find that skate to skate contact does the most to mess up the shine. Still, the shine isn't as important as the ability of the runner to hold an edge very well.

BTW, you can't go by what you see on the pro's, who know, they may change steel every few games. Unlikely but you never know.

I have had 2 sets of Velocity steel since January and they are still very shiny. (I don't do the sharpening though)

Tell Schwartzie to quit buying cheap honing stones!

Seriously, if you have a quality REAL 220 grit stone (the cheap stones aren't true grit stones, merely blasted with grit) you will not scratch up a figure skate blade or Velocity, which essentially are the same finish.

In a nutshell, if it isn't marked, chances are it's 100. ANd that's a rough stone.

Tell me this though - perhaps jimmy can answer as I've only sharpened Velocity once in my life and can't remember - do you even have to hone it?

But yeah, just do the tips as he says.

Coming off the sharpener, they rarely need any honing, they are that strong. No threads or shaving can be seen.. You can run a cotton ball down without catching. However if one gets a nick and it's curled out, hone just like other blades.
