Biohazard skate cleaning question.

Recommended Posts

So this winter a horde of mice destroyed my crappy home. It was awful, they got inside everything. They ran around the house at all hours of the day and peered at humans as if we were invaders in their living space, and so on. One night, a friend stayed the night and slept on the couch. The next morning he said: "That was pretty much the most horrifying sleep ever. All night long I could hear mice scurrying around inside the couch. It was like getting a back massage from a million tiny little feet."

When I saw them in my closet I feared the worst.

And indeed, they nested in my skates.

The thought of that awful mouse musk seriously turns my stomach, well, the thought of my foot sliding into that pee-encrusted boot, the thought of me skating hard during a game and working up a sweat and having that sweat mingle in mouse pee and poop particles before settling back onto my foot, and into my bloodstream via my feet's open pores.........

it's a bit much. but it can be overcome -- I could push it out of my mind if I thoroughly cleaned it. I mean, I'm a guy who ate cereal with ants in it because they kept invading the box and I didn't wanna throw it out. I don't have a weak stomach. I just want to make sure I can clean this effectively and totally. So, are these skates trashed? If not, how would you go about cleaning them? I do not have a HAZMAT suit, I'll throw that out right now.

the worst part is: I had one pair of ice and one pair of roller skates. they nested in only one of each skate, leaving me with no clean pair. I'd gladly say "well hey fuck ice, I'm playing roller for awhile" if I had to.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the problem was eventually solved. I borrowed my girlfriend's cat for a week (super effective! what a vicious killer!) and put poison all over the house, and boarded up all their mouse holes. I went nuts after I saw that my skates were trashed -- and when I opened my closet door to see a mouse, hanging out on top of my team Sweden Peter Forsberg jersey. I tried to strangle the fucker with my hand, that jersey is dear to me.

Anyway, the mouse problem was since solved, and regardless I've moved.

I could buy new skates, but I moved 2,000 miles and there are other priorities I should be spending money on first. I don't make a whole lot of money so a skate purchase is fairly significant.

So I gotta ask... Is it true?

well if it is true, soak them in a water and bleach solution, that will kill about anything.

yes, including the skates. (though one time probably would not do much damage).

I would just get some of that shoe sanitizer spray that uses something like alcohol to disinfect...it's the same stuff they use for rental skates or bowling shoes. Spray down the inside of the skates with it really well.

I used to store my hockey equipment in a basement that opened into a garage. Over the years I had a dog lift his leg on my bag and found my gloves stuffed with rat poison, so I feel your pain. They make a pet product called Natures Miracle that does wonders. It is basically rubbing alcohol and enzymes/additives that will get rid of any odors. Might want to give that a try instead of the bleach. I also spray my skates down with isopropanol/rubbing alcohol and it really helps prevents any odors.

I had a cat pee on my bag once. No matter how hard I cleaned, once the heat and sweat started to hit the gear during a game it reeked to high heaven. I'd get new skates if all possible.

Reminds me of the time my band mates cat sprayed in my brand new Gibson SG case.. I had to take the guitar home on the bus strapped on me wrapped in trash bag. There was no sparing the case, I took it to 3 cleaners- no dice.

I'd says something that drastic, you're going to need new skates. If it's a monetary issue, I'd say go used for a temporary basis...
