I saw this helmet at an unusual place today (walmart), anyone know how this compares to the s17 helmet or s9?

They have them in Quebec.

I tried it on and really didn't care for it. It felt like I was wearing a box.

As already posted similar to the S-9 but only a single layer of VN foam. Should work for you if your just playing non-contact or pickup and the S-7 is a very reasonable price. Make sure it has the HECC and SA approved stickers on it and it'll work fine for you.
