15 year CCM guy back on BAUERS w/ a couple Q's

Recommended Posts

I have been in CCM tacks since i was 8 (now 25) and more recently Vector Pros (7.5d). The Vectors had seen their day so i purchased the Bauer One95 (7.5d) because the fit was spot on to my foot. I have skated on them about 10 or so times in a competive hockey league and i feel some differences which brings some questions....

First off, the holder size of the TUUKs are 263 and in my last few CCMS they were 271... I am speedy north/south player and i feel i dont have as much straightline speed as i did before.. could this be size or the profile/radius of the TUUKs?! and do you think it is worth throwing on 272 or changing the profile!?

I am a forward and like to have a low stance and be on the balls of my feet.. would a 3mm heel lift on the TUUK bring me to a more aggressive position similar to the E-pros?!

other than that I love the fit and response of the skate...

I'm not as much of a skate expert as some guys here, but I've switched from CCM to Bauer before. My honest answer is give yourself at least 4-5 weeks to adjust before considering making any changes. Just getting used to a new radius will take you a while. A lot of guys will say, screw it, change everything right away but then you're awful dependent on one setup and limit your flexibility as a skater.

I've also used CCM's most of my life. I've heard on here before that a 3mm heel lift is equivalent to the Epro. I tried Bauer once a while back, and couldn't get used to it. Never tried to modify them though.

I went the other direction when I recently went from 20+ year old Microns (size 6.0 - 254mm) to CCMs (size 6.0 - 263mm). I found that I was faster with the longer runner, not significantly but definitely noticeable. This was further reinforced when I bought a pair of smaller RBKs (size 5.5 - 255mm) trying to get a better fit. That being my experience, I'd recommend that you try some not so drastic changes first. One of the aftermarket (Superfeet or Shock Doctor) footbeds may raise your heel enough. Also you might consider sharpening with a larger hollow (less bite, better glide) or FBV if it's available at a LHS.

Good Luck!

If you have the same profile on the skate, the length of the steel doesn't make a difference. A 9' profile is a 9' profile no matter how long the steel is. I would go to a longer profile, perhaps slightly toe down if you feel you need it.
