Need quick answer: shells\girdle\pants

Ok, someone enlighten me on pants\shells\girdles. Im going to start playing ice and i dont know squat about ice hockey gear as ive only ice skated once in my life and ive played roller all my life and never really payed attention to ice stuff.

So tell me, whats the difference between a girdle and pants? or would it be the difference between pants\shells. What im thinking is you need a girdle and a shell is just like a cover? but if a shell is a cover to cover a girdle what is a pant?

Pants have all pads/etc incorporated into a single unit. Girdle is the inner padding only and you wear the shell over it. Some pants are 2-pc and use a padded lower shell which has thigh pads on front/back. These usually attach with a set of buttons on the upper pad section.

Pants have all the padding in them. A girdle fits snug and the shell covers it. All personal preference which is better.
