Cage Question

Recommended Posts

"who has more merit and understanding of the product and its purpose: the engineers at nike/bauer or some randomn kid on a website forum? "

I'll go with the corporate attorney who writes the disclaimer to cover the companies ass

As for the J clips, I would say they are for energy transfer more than absorbtion. We can get into a technical debate but for now I'll just go with "I'll were mine, you do what you want."

Should the cage rest snug with the J clips? Mine have a small gap (1/4") when the cage straps are on.

yes, the cage should rest against the clips for the clips to work. if there is a gap, try lowering the clips (they are adjustable)

lol read again man...there is no disclaimer. the only bauer "disclaimer" is that the j clips aren't needed.

Okay man, who do you think came up with the idea of putting the wording in of "use of j clips are optional"...the attorneys who review every written word on every item a company that size sells. It may not say "disclaimer" on it but you can damn sure guarantee that if it went to court the first thing the lawyer says is "it says right here..." They know that some people will take the J clips of so they have to cover thier ass.

As an engineer you should know about how people have to cover thier asses...that is why things in construction and architecture are stamped "Reviewed" now instead of a "Approved" and every stamp has it's own little disclaimer. Reviewed means,; well I looked at it and it looked it looked okay. Approved means; yes I looked at it closely, check it for being correct and agree that it is right. There is a big difference between the two. One has no or limited responsibility and one has total or joint responsibility.

do you honestly believe that bauer put the j-clips there for safety reasons, then published a statement saying that the clips are not required and are there for comfort so that when someone gets injured due to removing the j clips, bauer is protected? are you 1% serious about this?

lol gm's lawyers should make a statement that seatbelts and airbags aren't required. that way if the air bag doesn't deploy and the seat belt breaks, contributing to someone's death, gm's lawyers can say "it says right here: airbags and seatbelts are not required. we're off the hook boys!" lol

The cage works just fine for its intended purpose without J clips. That purpose is protecting your face from sticks and pucks. Using it without the J clips does put you at a higher risk for concussions and injuries from high hits.

i am of the belief that j clips serve no purpose as well, given that the wearer is using the entire helmet/cage correctly.

naturally they shouldnt serve any purpose, right?

if you have a proper fitting cage...it should rest tightly on your chin. if you are hit in such a way that the cage is brought upwards...naturally there is no more room to go, thus it shouldnt be able to ever reach the j-clips.

now i understand the legal side of this as well. given that kids dont tend to keep their cage secured tightly (i dont), the j-clips MAY be able to prevent the helmet from causing physical injury to the jaw. but it provides security that bauer is not resonsible for the bonehead kids who dont want to tighten their cage or wear a cage too big.

maybe im way off but thats what i always thought...

Thanks. I adjusted them and now the cage sits perfectly snug.

I can't see why anyone would say that the J clips are not necessary. I'm picturing a collision from TWO points - one on the top of your head and one on the cage simultaneously. Without the J-clips, the cage and helmet would bend into your head and neck like Pac-Man's mouth - putting the impact on your TMJ jaw joints. With the J-clips, it keeps the two components from closing (as long as they don't break). I know a properly fitted helmet and cage will be your best line of defence. But for those very very rare types of collisions, the J-clips could make the difference.

And this is the bottom line: J-clips weigh like nothing and they are not intrusive at all. I see no reason to not use them.

yes, the clips keep the cage and helmet from moving relative to one another. but everyone here forgets that the cage and helmet move together, relative to your head, during impact. i'm not saying don't wear the clips. i just wanted to provide some info from bauer and try to correct some misinformation here.

just digged the topic but I do have a question: have you ever tried box lacrosse cage (http://www.probosslacrosse.com/catalog/popup_image.php?pID=895) for hockey? I'm thinking of having one as the eyesight seem better worked out compared to a cage (imho)

its not certified for hockey and you could probably get a stick blade or puck to the eye.

I agree that a blade could actually go through, although you would have to spear it, and I haven't thought of that, on the other hand, I don't see where a puck could get by.

you're probably right about the puck now that I look at the picture again. It was a quick look.
