my helmet

what model helmet is this?

the inserts that the top two cage screws thread into appear to have come loose such that if i turn the screw, the insert turns with the screw. i love this helmet but i need a new cage. i'm afraid of applying any amount of torque to loosen the screws because i don't want to damage the helmet. and i think the screws are somewhat seized to the inserts from corrosion. are the inserts simply embedded into the helmet padding? i think the padding has deteriorated some around the inserts allowing them to rotate some. can this helmet be repaired? i was afraid to remove the helmet padding. it doesn't look like it would come out so easily like the helmets with white hd foam padding.

Bauer 5000 or 5500 is the same helmet if youre looking to replace it.

If all the screws are rusted stuck and its ripping the padding apart it would probably be in your best bet to get a new helmet.

The NBH 5500 should be fairly cheap now too.

Thats a scary helmet....Im guessing its an old Bauer 5000

haha maybe i should put it in the oldest equipment thread

believe it or not, i've actually 'refurbished' it twice by sandblasting the rust and old paint away, primer and painting it. i sweat so much and apparently have very salty sweat

If WD40 doesn't work on the screws you can drill them out, but it looks like it's due for replacement anyway. I believe the USA Hockey line is for a new lid every three years.

I think the sanding and painting was just in regards to the cage, especially since you can still see the logos on the helmet itself.

But that's a Bauer 5000, which you can still dig up, or you can get it's newer twin the NB 5500, which is now on sale because the Nike name has been dropped and they're replacing the model with the 7500 soon.

But IMO, rust or patina on the hardware definitely means replace the helmet.

Yeh, my friend's cage broke after a shot to the face and the cage cut his face a bit. If your cage is rusty and that happens, then get ready for a tetanus shot

ofcourse the sandblasting and painting was on the cage only....plastic does not rust.

can anyone tell me how the insert is locked into place? is it just embedded into the padding? i'd really like to keep the helmet since the padding is as good as it was when i bought it and i've never taken any hard shots to the head with it. i'd like to simply get a new cage if possible.
