Shins Advice

Recommended Posts

I tried a pair of previous-generation RBK 6K shins today and loved them - deep knee fit, and those pads just stay put (even on my skinny legs). The problem is, I've always worn my shins behind my skate tongue (not so much flopped), and I suspect the suspension-style pads are too bulky to fit that way.

So, can anybody either put my mind at ease or recommend another pad with similar fit but less bulk in the ankle area? Also, how do you guys who wear the shins over the tongue get good forward flex?

I have 4k's and wear them inside the tongues. I am not sure how they compare to the 6k's size wise but have had no problems with mine.

I have a pair of the 1st generation RBK shins w/suspension straps and wear them over my tongues. What I did was remove both straps and use clear sock tape to tape the pad in place under the knee cap, no tape at the bottom near the ankle. This takes care of the forward flex problem and the socks + 1 strip of tape are enough to keep the shins in place.

I'm an over-the-tongue guy with old Itech 990 shins, which are pretty bulky, but do just fine for forward flex (I skate pretty low), but my skates have a lot of ankle flex too. I've started only taping at the knee and no ankle for the last couple seasons with velcro straps over the shins but under the socks at the knee, and I find that makes a noticeable difference in my outside edge control, and I haven't had any trouble with displacing the shins. When I've tried tongue-out skating I feel like I can't get my skates tight enough for good ankle support unless I use shin guards that leave a little gap above the top of my skates. To each their own, eh?
