Breaking In A New Skate

Recommended Posts

Hey so I just bought me a new pair of Mission Soldier SEs and this is my first new pair in quite a few years. So to break them in what is the best way? I know baking them is good, but i just feel a little hesitant with that, so are there any other ways other than baking or just playing in them? I heard if you run a sock in hot water, ring it out and wear it damp in the boot, that will help. Is this true?

Damp socks is how I've broken in skates since I was a kid. It's easier to put the sock on your foot and then wet it than it is to put it on wet, though.

I don't know how it'll work with newer composite skates. I was breaking in skates this way in the 80s. Since I got back into hockey, I've wet my socks in Graf 709's, Bauer Vapor XVI, and assorted Tacks.

Get some good skate insoles ie: superfeet and just skate in them....You can have the Missions baked in a skate oven if you want, some it works for some it dosent...But the best way is to just skate hands down...A few skates and you'll be good to go...

Use the skates at a consistent basis. Yeah, you can bake them and try all of the other stuff, but no matter what, you've got to get used to skating and playing in the skates. Just keep using them. It hurts at first, but that's the price to pay for new skates (other than the monetary cost, haha).

This newer mission lines are designed to be baked. You're not going to do any damage to them by baking them correctly. You'll notice your heel move back as soon as you do it, and you'll get a much better lock. Everything I've read points to them not only having the option of being bakable, but when the skate was designed they planned for people to be baking them. There's no reason not to do it.

I would get them baked and wear the skates as much as possible. Even around the house. The more you have them laced up on your feet, the quicker they will break in.

The last few times I was breaking in skates either for myself or for my wife or kids (other than the 18 year olds Kors) I have used a boiling water method I read about since I didn't want to try a home bake job and I didn't trust the rink pro shop which is as close as we come to an lhs for 100 miles. What I do is put a new gallon size ziploc bag in each skate then fill the bags with boiling water from a teapot. Then after 5 minutes I pull the bags and refresh the boiling water letting them sit for another 5 minutes. Then the skates go on and are laced tight making sure that the heel gets pulled back into the heel pocket properly. It has worked pretty well for us recently and I have not seen any longevity issues.
