Hi-Lo vs Tri-di chassis

Recommended Posts

So I was reading a recent thread and I thought someone said that with the Tri-di chassis, only 3 wheels contact the surface at a time. Am I correct in that? Also, with Hi-Lo chassis do only 3 wheels contact at a time as well?

Yes only 3 wheels contact with the tri di chassis. I can't say for sure about vanguards but I believe they all touch.

When you guys are judging this, are you having someone stand in the skate, then checking the wheels, or are you just holding the skate in your hand and rolling it on the floor/table?

I have leiutants with vanguards, and all four wheels touch flat when you're standing in the skate and when you're leaning. I have '08 tri-di and '06 tri-di, and all the wheels touch when you're standing flat in the skate. If you lean all the way forward or all the way back, the off wheel can spin a little bit, but it still brushes. I don't think you could put a creditcard between the wheel and the ground and have any space. It's not like on old rockered skates when the wheel would be a whole centimeter off of the ground.

Also, are you checking this with new wheels, or wheels that have been skated on a bunch? Wheels in different positions wear at different rates, so the fact that one isn't touching might be just because it has more wear on it, not a function of the chassis.

I have always used Hi-los but am thinking about the reebok 8K that comes with a tri-di. Can anyone comment on the comparisons performance wise? I would imagine it would be too noticeable. Also, the tri-di runs 72-76-76-80 (I think) but could you put 72-72-80-80 on it? Most of my wheels I have are those sizes. I probably would bother, until I blew a wheel.

The tri-di is designed for the set up it comes with. If you use different sized wheels, they either won't fit, or you'll have a wheel that either "sticks out" too far, or doesn't touch.

For example, changing to a 72-72-80-80 set up wouldn't work because the 80 won't fit in the space for the 76 wheel. Putting a 72 in the 76 spot would probably result in that wheel not touching the ground.

I skated hi-lo for years and switched to tri-di with no problem. I then skated on some vanguards for a while without any problem switching to that. Other people might be more picky about the nuances between the two, but I didn't have any problems. My only complaints with the tri-di is that it's a pain to buy wheels, because of the different sizes. Unless your local shop stocks bulk wheels, you have to either buy them online, or buy packs such that you have extra wheels.

my issue with the tri di is that the front wheel is a 72 and that's the wheel that wears out the quickest anyway. I always have the issue wear the front wheel is now twice as small as the other wheels thus making it awkward to skate...... if that makes sense.
