Tapered stick question

Recommended Posts

Tapered sticks are very popular these days but what does it mean when a stick says .470 taper vs a .520 taper.

I know that a .470 has a lower kick point than the .520 but what do these numbers stand for and how are they measured?

Thanks

.470 is just a thinner taper towards the end (assuming you are talking about shafts) which is why it only fits "low-kickpoint" blades. This thinner taper and longer shaft is supposed to create a low-kickpoint, resulting in a "faster release"

.520 is a bit wider taper and will only fit standard blades.

I'm not sure on the unit of measurement but I would assume (based on visuals) that these values are based on an inch.

The width of the opening at the bottom of the shaft where the tenon is inserted. I don't remember what unit it's in.

Measure it with a pair of calipers if you feel the need.

.620 is a standard blade, .520 is tapered.

my old xx stick says .470 taper so I assume .470 and .520 are just two different tapers.

.470 is usually on one pieces

.520 is usually tapered shafts

.620 is standard shafts

Exactly

.470 is Inno True-1, VaporXXX, MacDaddy, etc... type construction

.520 is Synergy, Response, "fused" OPS construction

.620 is Ultralight, ak27, type construction

Chad was the vapor xx fused? I thought I read somewhere that a vapor xx was the same as an inno 1100

Yes, the line was easily visible on them. Also amazingly similar to the Dolomite.
