Kevlar Sock

Recommended Posts

skarbro,

Can you post your thoughts about the socks after you receive them? I've got the yellow ones as well and although I haven't had problems with them, I was thinking of ordering another pair or 2 so I can wash one pair and have another already washed pair next time I play. I might give tuff n lite a try. Thanks.

Definitely. I plan on sharing the information so that others can decide to give them a try or not as well.

Hello everyone

I have actually tried both socks there is also another company that is offering cutresistant socks "Hogan" something.Tactics has the best feel compared to Tuff plus tactics are a little cheaper.

I also just saw something about Warrior buying Tactics so that should be better for availability instead of having to wait on an internet order plus would be kinda cool to see if they can add the kevlar to their wristguards but I am sure they are all over that . Another Fun Fact: I have a neighbour who plays in the 'Show" and he actually got his hands on both "TuffnLight" and "Tactics" echoed my thoughts as well on the comfort level.

Couple questions I had:

Skarbo have you ordered the Tactics full length hockey sock yet to try?

I looked through the Tuff n lite site and they had an audio clip where the guy mentions Crosby and the Penguins does that mean Jordan Stall was wearing their socks?

Konig von Kuhlem - Heat drawing properties? never experienced any sort of discomfort from Tactics were you refering to Tuff socks?

are you the Tuff N Lite rep lol you seem to know an awful lot about the UHMWPE hahaha just kidding!

Actually if you factor in shipping, the Tuff N Lite socks are cheaper.

I have had some really good emails from a rep. I can't wait to try them out.

I have no issues with the comfort of the Tactics. In fact they are the most comfortable skate socks I have ever used. I am curious how the Tuff N Lite compares.

The thing I like about Tuff N Lite is that they go all the way up the sock.

I haven't bought the Tactics hockey socks. They sound good but are very expensive. I'm still on the fence. Still it is interesting to hear that Warrior might buy them out.

FWIW, I've had about 25 skates with the tactics sock. Which also translates to 25 washings. All is good, no complaints. They are different than say shock doctors as they don't stretch as much when removing (they are wet). No apparent wear from the washing (@80C, no bleach or softener). No regrets with the purchase. Will consider a second pair near end of summer.

BTW, Tactics has free shipping on the weekends ...at least they did for a few weeks when I ordered mine.

Well I received my Tuff-n-lite socks today. Super fast shipping (3 days!). I haven't skated in them yet, but the exterior texture feels course and fibrous.

I was going to get the Tactics (I still may get the full hockey socks), but I saw the videos of the tests and I read up on the materials used in the Tuff-n-lites and I was sold. I also found another company that makes Kevlar socks for speed skating (Garneau), so I guess there are several similar products competing out there.

Yeah I was told by the rep that I would receive them by tomorrow! That's pretty fast.

I'm anticipating that the Tactics will beat the Tuff N Lites in the softness department. But the real test will be while skating in them.

So I've played 2 games in the Tuff-n-Lite socks. They are quite nice. It took a little getting used to wearing a high sock as is covers most of the calf. The only downside I noticed (that's been mentioned before) is you have to be careful not to get velcro stuck to it. It REALLY likes to stick to velcro. Other than that, I'm pleased with my purchase.

Yeah the Tactics are long too. I like them like that. Makes me feel like I'm wearing a school girl uniform. :)

Thanks for the review. I'm still waiting for my order. I sent them to my office so I am not sure if they are there yer.

Another cut by a player wearing a protective sock (Hal GilL).... Starting to question the validity of these so called cut resistant socks.

From TUFF N LITE site...

"The Montreal Canadiens have become the first NHL team to order Tuff-n-Lite ® Hockey high performance cut resistant skate socks and are wearing them under game conditions".

Mustve got tangled up in some velcro ha ha.

almost the entire montreal team is wearing those clear plastic skate guards as well - they seem to be trying out all kinds of new stuff

that is weird though - if he was actually wearing them how does that happen?

I really can't see these preventing cuts all that well. You can have your body get cut without the material above getting cut... And that's what will happen with these. A skate will slice across the sock, and the sock will give, allowing the blade to still sink into and cut the skin, even though the sock itself won't be cut. It's a start, and will prevent minor cuts, but anything that would be a serious lifethreatening cut will not be prevented by this type of sock. More work definitely needs to be done before these provide protection against all types of cuts.

Ambro brings up a very interesting point about pressure cuts. We have had two NHL players have skates go across their ankles wearing our protective socks. Travis Moen had a bruise and a pressure nick. The sock did not compromise but the pressure caused a slight surface cut by splitting the skin. We test our material at the same lab that certifies neck guards. The place a 1/2 inch foam, which is to represent skin, under the material we tested to see exactly what ambro mentions regarding pressure cuts. The lab explained that when testing neck guards some of the materials do not compromise but they do not do enough to prevent deep pressure cuts that could be dangerous, especially around the neck. Just because material doesn't cut doesn't me an it will pass. The testing of our skate sock material used a 215 lb weight as the "player". They attached a new sharpened skate blade under the weight. Our material we use for the socks and wrist protectors was placed over the foam/skin and then the cylinder holding them was launched at 15 miles an hour to have contact with the "players" blade. They do three passes at different spacings on the material. Even if the material does not compromise they check the marking on the foam to see if it would be a live threatening or serious injury. Not once on 15 passes ( blade is changed for a new one after 9 passes) was the foam/skin penetrated deeply by a pressure cut. You can see the actual test at www.tuffnlitehockey.com

We are constantly trying to improve and offer the best protection on the market other then Kevlar. We have a full length goalie tube coming that is the same material and will go from ankle to thigh. Since our material, as pointed out by another member loves velcro and is a pain when they meet, I made it for garter belt use. I actually found out most of the pros are still wearing garter belts. Hey, what did I know, I am a defenseman.

Cheers

I just thought I would give an update. I've been wearing the "Pro Thin Foot" Tuff-N-Lite socks for almost 6 months now, one skate a week in the summer and 2-3 skates per week now that the season has started again. I also bought a pair of Tactics Kevlar skating socks to compare the two materials (I'm nerdy that way  ). Fortunately I haven't been in a situation where I've needed the protection from a skate blade, but I can comment on the fit and comfort.

I like the "cool to the touch" feel of the Tuff-N-Lite socks, while the Tactics socks feel warmer. Also the Tuff-N-Lite socks are a lot easier to put on and take off than the Tactics socks. The Tactics socks have a soft foot portion, but the Kevlar section that covers the ankle and calf is stiffer and can be annoying to take off. The ankle and calf section of the Tuff-N-Lite socks are soft and flexible like cotton, which I like.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the only down point of the Tuff-N-Lite socks was that when I first started using them, they used to get stuck to the velcro straps on my shin pads (although I don't notice that happening anymore as I'm careful in putting them on). The velcro does not get stuck to the Tactics Kevlar socks. I also noticed that the Tuff-N-Lites don't go as high on my calf as they used to. The Tactics socks go up to almost right under the knee (but the top couple inches of cuff don't have Kevlar in them), while the Tuff-N-Lite socks are a few inches shorter. I contacted Tuff-N-Lite Hockey about the length of the socks and they were very helpful and said the new socks are longer and have addressed this difference.

Both types of socks feel like quality products, but overall, I like the comfort of the Tuff-N-Lite socks better than the Tactics mainly because of the better heat transfer away from my legs (cooler temperature) and ease of putting it on like a regular sock.

I agree. The Tuff N Lite are better for comfort and seem a but more durable. I have been using them for months now. And the service is way better than Tactics' service.

Thanks for the above video link.

To all faithful ModSquad members,

I have been a faithful ModSquad follower myself since meeting the ModSquad crew at last years trade show, always checking in to see the latest reviews and hockey talk.

I do not post often on hockey equipment forums/blogs or chats but I felt it was needed since "Nerm"/"DavidTuff" aka David Nerman of Tuff n Lite Hockey has been a strong basher of our product on numerous blogs and hockey related websites.

First off I would like to say that hockey equipment is a preferance. What one player deems to be amazing, another player

may dislike.Every player has quirks and some just like to stick to the tried and true ie: Shanahan with his shoulderpads,

and Paul Coffey with his skates.

With that being said I would like to once and for all clear up some of the accusations and misleading statements made by our competition.

1.)Tactics Armoured Socks are hot and uncomfortable - REALITY NOT TRUE - we have incorporated CoolMax thru the sock which draws moisture AWAY from the body and leaves your legs dry and cool.

2.)Tactics Armoured Socks degrade over time and have to be replaced after washing a number of times - REALITY NOT TRUE - In addition to Kevlar (THE MOST WIDELY USED PROTECTIVE FIBRE IN THE WORLD) we have added to our 2010-11 model socks Spectra fibre which is 10x stronger than steel and will back-up any form of Kevlar breakdown within the sock leaving it just as strong from the first day you buy them.

And as always companies can come on and boast about their products and put down those in the same catagory.Factually...Tactics Armoured Hockey Socks was the first protective hockey sock on the market, we are 100% made in North America, we use nothing but certified top grade material from companies such as DuPont, Honeywell, Invista.

And the last thing Tactics will do is bash another company with misleading propaganda and false advertising.

The players, coaches and trainers wearing and ordering our apparel will tell you the same:

(NONE OF THE FOLLOWING HAVE BEEN COMPENSATED IN ANY WAY FOR THEIR TESTIMONIALS)

“I use Tactics Armoured socks and they are fantastic! They are comfortable and easy to wear. They offer great protection and don’t interfere with my skating mobility at all. I recommend these socks to skaters of all ages as way of reducing career ending skate injuries. I know that I’ll be wearing them when I get on the ice.” Matt Puempel Peterborough Petes/CHL & OHL Rookie of the Year 2010

"I've seen guys who have had their Achilles tendon cut and that's a pretty long recovery, you want everything protected. I started wearing Tactics a couple of months ago and I know I'll wear them for the rest of my hockey career." Zack Kassian Buffalo Sabres /Windsor Spitfires 1st Round NHL Draftee

"“This here is the Tactic Armoured Sock and I think it’s pretty good, its 400 times more powerful (Cut Resistant) than an ordinary sock”! “It’s nice and thin and it looks like it will do a pretty good job”! Don Cherry - Coaches Corner

"The guys like the sock as well as the protective component, they recognize that it is something they can wear that can help reduce their chance of injury." Darren Granger Los Angeles Kings Equipment Manager

Granger said many of the Kings have tried the socks with Alexander Frolov, Raitis Ivanans, Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams making them a regular part of suiting up.

Judge for yourself! For more video and insight into our protective apparel check out our facebook site or our website www.tacticssocks.com or as always please feel free to contact me directly should any other modsquad members have questions about our products justin@tacticssocks.com

FWIW, My tactics have now been through the washer at least 77 times. Looks /feels the same as after the 2nd time. Durability does not seem to be a issue.
