Going to lighter flex?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if there's a big difference between high end TPS reg flex (95) and high end, tapered reg. flex Bauer Shafts (87)?

I ordered a 102 flex x60 shaft on ebay. The seller made a mistake in the listing, it's actually an 87. I'm thinking about keeping it, but wondered if you guys think that it might be a big jump in flex. I'm 6'1" 230-235, heavy shot (ex-college player). I take mostly wristers, and load the shaft a lot when I have time. I'm currently using a 95 flex TPS R9XN10 shaft. I'll need to cut the Bauer a few inches, but not much.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Sickwilly, you should be fine. The X60s play stiffer to begin with and cutting them obviously only furthers that. My old 87 cut 2" felt like 100+.

Its funny the Pro Stock I have seen and most of the Bruins Players under 6'1 use a lower flex 80 or less-87. Trouble is so many guys on here think they are way strong because they can curl 90 pounds to start. Its not strength of weights. Its like a golfer, a STRONG shot is completely different than a strong arm. Its like bat speed in baseball. Its also not a XXXXS measuring contest if you can shoot a 112. You guys feel a laggy shot LOL!!!! So funny most of you can't even see a stick flex unless its slow motion on TV with a pro shooting. Then accuracy? If you are picking corners every game step up your level or go to a try out. If you are playing A hockey and picking corners there is a contract waiting for you.

Im guessing the pros with the "wimpy" noodles would walk around you and make you look foolish with 5 min to teach you how to shoot. But only the cool guys use 100+ flex. Oh and Adam Oates? really you gonna compare a WOOD stick that in about 40 min of play loses most of its pop and there is almost no way to make every wooden stick like the composites of today.

To answer the question most playmakers use a medium flex depending on size. Defense uses higher flex for what they do its NOT all about slap shots.

That would be right. Only Easton starts with a light flex and as you cut it the closer it is to the label

How is the shaft working out for you?

No chance to use it yet, unfortunately. I live in a really rural spot without any summer ice. Soon, though! I'm pretty sure it will be just fine.

Wow great posts from everyone! I've decided to go with a 75 flex S19 either Chara or Zetterberg since that's all they have.

I agree, great posts in this thread for a guy learning the ways of the current stick world.

I have an S19 85 flex Heatley cut 1 1/2" and I really like how the stick feels. The lie is something I'm still trying to get used to, but it feels better every skate. Anyway, yesterday I ran into a deal on the s19's at a local shop. 120$ out the door. I've had such good luck with the durability of the one I have that I bought two more.

The only curve left that was acceptable to me was Iginlias. One100 flex and a couple of 75s. I bought one of each so I will have two sticks that are identical other than flex to play with and compare to see which one I like better. I suspect the 100 flex will be stiffer than I need or want, but I've never played with a stick that stiff so we shall see.

Man, getting back into hockey sure has been expensive, LOL

i haven't played in several years, went to the hockey store and the guy convinced me to try something real whippy. i'm 5'10, 160lbs, played for ages. i didn't know what to compare to and got a 67 flex. vapor x20. thing is like a noodle, i can't control my shots very well with it. every once in a while it will just fly off the blade, but more often than not, don't get a good shot.

are there any places that let you shoot around with different sticks? not cheap to use trial and error to find the right stick.

We dont have many LHS's around where I'm at but Play it again sports all seem to have a puck shooting surface with a bunch of sticks to shoot with. I believe they charge a fee to use it...but I've never actually asked, or seen anyone use it for that matter...
