Blade Selection Help

Recommended Posts

I used to have a mean shot a few years back when I we really into hockey.

Currently I am having difficulty getting a lot of pure spin and speed on my wrist shoots. Lately they tend to be floppy... not perfectly spinning.

One thing I know is that I used to have shorter sticks than what I use now.

I am using a Bauer P92 right now which has Lie=6 curve= Mid Toe ,Open med length.

When I used my older sticks from back in the day, they felt really short...

before I start really wasting my money on expensive curve inserts, I am hoping to get some insight on curves.

I am thinking my problem has to be somewhat tied down to the lie of my stick. I have noticed there is a lot more wear on the tape near the heel. I take it this means that I have a longer stick?

What does a curve at the toe do? I take it is more for puck control and being able to lift the puck easier...

Curve at the toe doesn't do anything, it's just a preference. I find that curves with less depth make it easier to put spin on the puck, others will disagree I'm sure.

You need a lower lie if you are going to use that length of stick or a shorter stick if you are going to use that lie.

Hockey giant only had them in Left hand though.

Hockeymonkey had them too. In the one95 replacement blade.

Yeah, I also enjoy the p106 but back to the main point. As Chadd mentioned, it seems like the OP might be having an issue with lie and potentially technique. Make sure you are using the proper push/pull wrister motion and release near the toe, but not at the very end of it.

Good point, is the lie on the p106 different than the p92? I had heard it was lower than the lie6 stated on the bauer website.

Well, I think it might technically be a 6 but it feels like about a 5.25 because of the rocker. BTW, this is a surprisingly popular pro pattern. I've gotten so many pro stocks that look like a p106, I can't even count it. That kind of bucks the idea that everyone is going to more open toes.

I don't blame them for choosing it! I was picking corners including top shelf with slapshots from the opposite blue line last night with that stick. Rising the whole way, amazing control!

Sorry don't mean to detract from the original post.

I was hitting them from near the red line some time ago, when I was actually using the slap shot:) P106 is a nice pattern because you do get the moderate heel curve and it does open at the toe a little, so you get shooting help. But it's not such a big curve or so open that it hurts you at doing other things. I think more companies need to offer a p106 clone. Heatley was similar but with a shorter blade. I have gotten okay with using a more open curve, so I can switch between the p106 and Drury fine now, but it caused me fits for quite a while.

Thanks guys! The P106 was a great blade selection. I love the feeling of the blade.

I am glad you like it! It is one awesome curve in my opinion!
