Cobra Holder Question / Skate Question

Recommended Posts

Two questions:

(1) If I were to remove the Cobra holders on 703s, Supra G3s, or Ultra G3s, and replace them with either LS2s or E-Pros would I need to insert heel lifts to obtain the same pitch as Bauer or Reebok skates respectively? Basically, in this case does the difference in pitch between the three types of holders come from the holders themselves, the actual sole of the skate, or both?

(2) I currently use RBK 9Ks and find they do not fit perfectly. I have skated on them for about a year and find my heel is not locked in. I tried on a pair of Graf 703s and found that they felt much better; my heel could not move even the slightest bit in the "pocket" for the bottom of my ankle. I have heard that Bauer is the only company that really builds a perfect custom skate size. If I wanted to order custom Bauer skates would they be able to make the "pocket" that Graf has in the 703s? If so, how would I go about getting a truely custom fit? I like the fit of Grafs but want the performance of one95s/TOs). Price is not an issue.

Thank you for the reply.

1. What size heel lifts should I put on for Tuuks and E-Pros in that case?

2. I will look into the Ultra G3s. What is the difference between the Ultra G3s and the Supra G3s (I don't even seen Supra G3s on the Graf website)?

I put Pitch 3s on my Graf 735s. Worked great, but it took a lot of holes in the bottom so get a good shop to do it for you. I found them on eBay and the bonus is not only adjustable pitch, but the steel is great.

Original G3 was an updated 703, but it is really made irrelevant by the Ultra series.

If you go to different holders other than the cobra's I would reccomend pitching the boot forward by contouring the steel. With plastic shims/ heel lifts the material will settle and move with the movement of your foot. If you add the forward pitch to the steel it will not shift or move in any way (until some idiot ruins the contour by sharpening like a donkey).

I'll be sure to give the Cobras a spin but with over 10 years on E-Pro or Pro Lite's I'm not optimistic.

If I mounted E-Pros onto G3s without heel lifts would it bend the holder?

The new cobra 5000s are a significant improvement on the older model. If you mount e-pros you will be more neutral and less on your toes. If you're going to add the lift back in, you might as well just stick with the Cobras. Obviously you would need to have them profiled down to 10' to match your e-pros though.

What was wrong with the old ones and how are the new ones better?

I'm saving up for a pair of new 735's and trying to get as much knowledge as I can on the subject.

The 3000s tended to get soft, a little more than other holders. The 5000s are less likely to absorb water and should stay stiffer, longer.

My main goal is to remain with the exact same pitch, radius, etc of the E-Pros on my 9Ks.

How should I mount E-Pros to do this?

How could I alter the Cobra 5000s to do this?

Are Tuuks really unanimously better than E-Pros? Are they lighter and stronger?

1. If you put e-pros on Grafs they will be very close to what you are skating on now

2. Having the steel profiled would work

3. Better? not really. Tuuks lightspeed will be slightly lighter than e-pros

For any of you gram whores our there, whats the difference in weight between E-Pros and LS2s

Chadd, thank you for your continued responses. If I mounted Tuuks on the Cobras would they be near to the pitch of my 9K E-Pro?
