carodz 17 Report post Posted August 30, 2011 During a game (April 18th), the edge of my right skate got caught in a rut, causing me to lose my balance and fall backward/sideways, twisting my ankle in the process. I knew as soon as I'd fallen that something was pretty broken, as I heard/felt that eerie "pop" noise during the fall, and my foot felt like it was hanging a little looser than it should when held up. I ended up with a broken fibula, and tore the shit outta some ligament on the medial side of my ankle (never found out what, specifically, but the inside of my ankle is still bruised/swelling 4+ months later). On 4/27 I had surgery to repair the bone (hooray, screws!) and it wasn't until June 7th that I was cleared to walk without crutches (I still had to keep the stupid boot on for a little while after that). Today I've got pretty complete range of motion and have no problems walking long distances around campus, but my ankle still swells, even after over 4 months after surgery to repair the bone. I no longer have to see the orthopedic surgeon, and he's told me I can return to sports but I should "stick to straight-line stuff for a while" (i.e. no hockey). I know I've personally decided to keep from playing until my ankle is back to relatively normal size, hopefully indicating that the stupid ligament has healed completely.I'd never had a "real" bone injury before this. About 2-3 years ago I had a small stress fracture in my left foot and was supposed to "keep off of it" for a month and use crutches, but abandoned them after a week of having to crutch around campus AND upstairs to my 3rd story apartment at the time. This time around the crutches didn't seem as bad, maybe because I had no choice but to use them for over a month, and they quickly became normal to me as my way of getting around. Probably the most annoying thing was not being able to drive for ~2 months, seeing as it was my right ankle that was busted (atrophy was also pretty bizarre). Also, I'll eventually have to overcome the irrational fear I now have that my ankle will snap as soon as I try skating again, but that's a whole 'nother thread. Anyway, enough of my rambling and onto some pre- and post-op x-rays of my ankle.Broken:Repaired:

BenderHockey 127 Report post Posted September 1, 2011 That looked really painful. I remember the time I broke my tibia. Every bump in the road on the way to the hospital...You aren't kidding. The feeling of the ends of your bone rubbing together isn't exactly pleasant.
