Gripstik or Power Arm trainers

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used either of these training aids to increase forearm and wrist strength? I just kind of stumbled across them but they look kind of like gimmicks. Not trying to promote them, so Mods let me know if I should take these down, but I'll provide the links just in case people know them by a different name, or just dont know what they're called.

If anyone has used these, or maybe has some kind of similar home made trainer, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks all.

I haven't used either of those but I would highly recommend the Ivanko SuperGripper. The only negative is the grip is metal but a little tape will solve that problem. IVANKO

I also use a Wrist roller. I've seen homemade version of these.

i use something similar called the PowerStik that I've had since '94. just started using it again last week as I'm rehabbing a broken wrist. I wish I had never stopped using it b/c it is great.

I stumbled across a really cheap and easy method by accident. I'd take some of the really stiff sticks I had that I could baaarely flex at all, and flex them several times a day as much as I could. I'm still doing this and it appears to help a lot for strength gain in the arms.

Your forearms/grip will get all the work they need from doing a regular lifting program with exercises such as deadlifts, cleans, barbell rows, etc. No need to buy some gimmick product for grip training.

Sorry about the links - just google them if you're interested.

I disagree that direct forearm training isn't necessary. The same arugment has been made for abs and yet most people do specific exercises to target the abs. Yes, you can improve grip strength with core lifts but that isn't always going to give you popeye forearms or a bone crushing grip.

I think everyone has certain bodyparts that respond better/quick to training than others. You can enhance those lifts' impact on your grip strength by using a thicker bar or wrapping a towel around the bar when lifiting. You can also do targeted grip training with barbell and dumbbell exercises. And finally you can use some type of grip trainer like those mentioned above.

Heck, you can even get a new job. Blue collar guys like mechanics and carpenters always seem to have the strongest grips - because they use those mucles all the time.

You can fry your forearms with barbells and pulleys. I don't see the need for a whole new piece of equipment just for one muscle.

Maybe the need for these supplemental devices that target specific muscles is for an exercise you can do at your desk, or while sitting in your car.

There is room in training for more than just bars, dumbbells, and plates. Keep an open mind.

That's what I was considering, using them while at work. I run reports all day so I spend a lot of time waiting for results to be returned and thought it might be beneficial to find something I could use at my desk.

I wouldn't pay $40+ for a plastic junky thing that gives me the same workout as a piece of wood, string and a weight.

I travel for work every week so it's something that's easy for me to pack that I can do a few sets of in the morning or when I'm just sitting around watching TV
