Randy Holt, 67 penalty minutes in an NHL game.

Recommended Posts

March 11, 1979 Randy Hold took 9 penalties (a record) for a grand total of 67 penalty minutes, another record. I can't find anything on the internet about it, does anyone know about the incident or can find a recap?

Holt, here is a blog/articles about him

Me and my bro played shinny vs him 6 yrs ago, he was 51, we didn't know who he was. He kept on hitting my brother in the boards and slashing everyone, so my bro thinking this is some angry old shinny player, he starting pushing him and they fought, my brother left with a bloody nose and Holt had a bloody lip. Some of the other players told us after that he used to play in the NHL and has the single game penalty record.

Edit: as you can read in the articles, he was also hit bye a car, which he says attributes to his anger and can set him off.

He was also charged with assault back in 89 during a shinny game.

You might not have found anything if you searched for "Randy Hold", since his last name is actually Holt.

From Wikipedia:

The toughest player on the Los Angeles Kings, Holt had been acquired mid-way through the 1978–79 season to add muscle to a skilled Kings team, and was expected to be a factor when the team travelled to Philadelphia to face off against the fearsome Flyers. After picking up a minor penalty early in the first period, Holt fought Philadelphia enforcer Frank Bathe at 14:58 of the first period, picking up 20 minutes in penalties. However, Holt felt that he had been a victim of a cheapshot from Flyers' agitator Ken Linseman earlier in the game, and at the end of the first period instigated a bench-clearing brawl in an attempt to settle the score with Linseman. He was assessed a further 45 minutes in penalties for his actions during the brawl, including a triple game misconduct, bringing his game total to 67, shattering the previous NHL record of 52 set by Jim Dorey in 1968. He was also suspended three games by the league for his actions.

I also found this clip from, what I'm guessing is that same game, where Holt fights Bathe:
