Winnwell protective

Recommended Posts

The shoulders and shins look good digitally...

Anybody who has seen/tried them, are they... (please specify which of the products you're referencing, and comparisons are welcome)

  • Comfortable?
  • Bulky?
  • Mobile?
  • Light?
  • Does the NXT work against odor?

Thanks.

Never tried any of their products but I was always under the impression that their stuff was really low end. Winwell is sold mostly at Canadian Tire, which is notorious for selling low end hockey equipment.

Skarbro is correct. Very low end equipment. Great for pond hockey but I'd get something higher up with better padding and more plastic inserts for any kind of league play. Don't skimp on protection. It'll cost you in the long run with medical bills and time off work or school.

I have the pants. Got them because they were cheap and a generous cut for XXL. Very light and comfortable for shinny. Don't know if I would want them in a more competitive game.

On Long Island of all places, I saw a bunch of Winnwell gear live yesterday. What I saw was pretty nice (definitely a lot better than I expected), especially the Pro Stock line, and the G-Lite line wasn't bad at all either. If I wasn't well stocked right now, I wouldn't hesitate to buy some.

I had the winwell shins for my first pads...

[*]Comfortable? - average

[*]Bulky? - no, but they felt that way because they are a little heavier than average and the straps are way too long and don't hold the pads in place at all so they tend to slid around some unless you have done a good job with the tape

[*]Mobile? - yes, no problems there

[*]Light? - no, slightly heavier than average becuase they use more thickness in a lower density foam - hence more material - hence more weight

[*]Does the NXT work against odor? - Only when wet when you're playing. That is, the stank factor doesn't get any worse during a game. However you still need to dry them the same as any other shin pads. If you don't, they will stink and in fact the only pads I've had any problems with mold were these ones.

The foams are thick, wrap around the calf well enough and extend past the edges of the knee cap offering some extra protection from sticks and pucks but they are not top-of-the-line shin pads that protect well in a fast paced game with contact. Also the knee cap is fairly flat and doesn't have great suspension so if you fall on the knee you'll feel it.

Mine lasted about 1 and 1/3 years and then the knee cracked.

I had to fold the straps back on themselve, put a couple of heavy duty staples into them and wrap the stapled part of the strap with duct tape to get the straps tight enought to fit.

They are fine for beginner and recreational games or pick-up but if you get to any level of playing faster and with enough contact to be falling down or be pushed down on a regular basis get something with a heavier duty knee cap that isn't flat at the front.

What line of product did you have?

I had the G-lite (orange) and not the compXT (blue). don't even bother with the CompXT as they are very poorly designed and made. I had compXT elbow pads that started to rip apart after 10-12 skates and I threw them out as it wasn't worth saving them.

The G-Lite line is the line that is comparable to most lower to lower-mid level equipment from other manufacturers, in my opinion.

i got a pair of the glite pants about 6 years ago because i got a really good deal on them. they werent the most expensive winwell pants (there was another model that was significantly more). i used them for about two years. they were plenty of protection for beer league hockey. back then i was playing 4 times a week on average. the pants are still fine to use but show a good amount of wear (some of the low density padding is disentegrating). i definately got my money's worth. they were very light and mobile. they were way better than the low end pants from the name brands.

litte OT, but has anyone seen the new winnwell stick that was mentioned in the VEGAS thread?

I saw one of the sticks in the Pro Stock line and thought it was very nice. One of the lower end ones (GX7 maybe), not so much. Similar comparison among the product lines, really...Pro Stock much nicer than the lower lines.

Plaza Sports in Rocky Point, actually. When I was a kid, it was in Centereach, and was my favorite sports shop.

Winnwell GX-8 OPS with a $100-110 USD Retail. 490g, 100% carbon, great balance, thin blade

that's what Marcelo posted in the vegas thread, but haven't heard a thing about it since

Not sure if Winwell's stuff has changed but the store I worked at 4 years ago had a bunch of Winwell stuff shipped in from Toronto. I remember unloading the truck and thinking how cheap the stuff was. Definitely seemed on the lower end.

It's prob good for Beer League but anything competitive I'd go with the bigger brands.

Gotcha... that's a haul for me. I'm in Merrick. When I'm at the Rinx I always check that place out because I think they have the best selection on the Island.

The South Windsor Arena/Hockey1.com in Connecticut has the GX-8(SR) and the GX-7(JR) in the store. I was pretty impressed they were light and cosmetically look very clean. The weave on them looks just like the weave on the Bauer TO stick.

I have the new WinnWell G-lite gloves. They were about $60 US from a Play It Again Sports in WI. Nice product. I have used them for a few few months and they don't stink and tend to dry quickly. I bought them for days when I go to work after hockey. Don't have to worry about scrubbing my hands before work as my hands don't stink with these gloves. A little narrower fit than I'm used to but I'm starting to like it. Gloves are light, good looking, and offer decent to good protection.

I also bought the G-lite shin guards for under $35 new. Comfortable and light with a narrow feel toward the bottom. Good shin guards for pickup games-but I would go with the WinnWell Pro Stock shins for more intense hockey. These shinguards also dry fast and do not smell. The best and longest breezers I've owned are Winnwells. I've had my Winnwell breezers for over 10 years with no stich damage. These breezers are from when Winnwell was owned/distributed by Irwin (not the new ownership company).

The new Winnwell composite sticks look quite nice for the money --but I have not used them yet. I somehow found & bought a new WinnWell RX2 (?) wood and fiberglas ABS stick that is nice. I'm guessing it may have been made been a different brand spray painted with blue and black Winnwell colors over it. I wish I knew more about these WinnWell wood sticks (made in Canada).

Pretty happy with the different WinnWell product line offerings.
