Pant Shell - Over the top or does the pant go inside them

Recommended Posts

Two questions actually.

Firstly, with ice hockey pant shells. Do they simply go over the top of the your pants (basically designed like a pair of shorts?). If this is the case, what prevents them from being pulled up while you skate exposing the other pant underneath. What keeps them down?

Or alternatively, do you pants go into them like an actual shell/case so that the bottom of your pant underneath can never be exposed?

And the only other question I have is, how common are girdles in the NHL? Which popular players use them, if any.

Pant shells are like shorts for your pants. The ones I've seen have button holes for where suspenders would attach to your pants. This keeps the shell in place. They usually have a belt on them as well to keep them secure. As for riding up exposing the bottom of the pants, well, there's not much they can for that but it rarely happens unless the shell is too short.

I've wear my pant shell over my hockey girdle. They have a waist strap that tightens right between the hip protector and the kidney protector so they stay in place pretty well. In any case, more girdles have a soft/fabric surface, so you don't have to worry about them sliding off. You don't need suspenders if that's what you are wondering.

I think girdles are pretty popular in the NHL these days. These players use them that I know of: Bobby Ryan, Michael Grabner, Todd Bertuzzi, Dan Cleary, Olli Jokinen

Gaborik did when he was with the Wild, I don't know about now.

Roman Hamrlik appears to wear the Reebok 9k girdle.

I'm a little long in the legs and I'm thinking of going to a girdle. Anyone know what certain brands of shells run longer if any?

I've got the RBK 9K (2009) pants and its core padding is adjustable. I'm short at 5'7", 170lbs, so I needed to shorten the leg length. Slight adjustment with the Velcro and they fit fine. They seemed meant for guys with longer legs if you ask me. Great pants, took a puck on the ass and didn't feel a thing. Comfortable, and they're not heavy on the body after skating toward the end of the game. Unlike my Easton S7 pants, which felt like buckets of water on each leg by the end of the game.

I also looked into Bauer as well. X:60 girdle looks and sounds like a great girdle (only checked out the specs never actually had them) with good protection and some adjustable parts (not sure about leg length). But the 9K's were on sale and had the "shell". Bam, picked up the 9K with out hesitation and so far really like'em.
