Quick question about skate width - need help

Recommended Posts

To the point: I heard that there is about 1/8" difference in width between D and EE for adult sizes, but what is the difference in width between 7 and 7.5? Would D -> EE offset the loss in width going from 7.5 -> 7??

Explanation: Im sure many of you have seen the fiasco that was my online skate buying with the One80s recently. Long story short, messed up twice buying wrong skate size online. Now I know what I need pretty much. I had planned on going to my LHS to do it right and buy the new supremes form them, but it turns out they arent getting any EE skates in (keep reading). My 8Ds were too long but felt pretty good width wise in the foot. Could have been slightly more snug. So my thoughts are that a 7.5D would be perfect width, but I think they might still be slightly long based on how much toe room I had in the 8D. I dont want to go to a 7D because I think it would be too narrow. SOOOOO.... if I go to a 7EE for proper length, would that be about the same width as an 8D or a 7.5D?

Im probably going to buy online again because Im pretty sure Id need a 7EE and I wont even be able to confirm it at my LHS because they wont carry EE. Its ok though, theres only a $5 charge to exchange for a different size at hockeymonkey if need be.

Well I just called both HM and HG. The reps at HG seems to be much more knowledgeable than the ones at HM. The guy at HG told me that the difference in length between half sizes was 5/16", and for width going from D -> EE is was about 3/8". He stated that a 7EE would actually be as wide or even wider than an 8D. He said in the 7-8.5 range the changes in width is very minor but its a big length difference.

Have you all found this to be true? Since I had roughly 0.5" toe room in my 8D, should I go to 7.5D and be almost touching the toecap, or 7D and touch the toecap? Since the heel settles back some during break in Im thinking the 7D might be good. But will it be too narrow in the foot...?? Keep in mind my ankles are super narrow so if I could get away with a 7 it would probably fit better at the ankle than a 7.5.

Hey thanks! That is helpful as I can order a couple pair and return the one that doesnt fit!

I actually just called icewarehouse, and the CS rep named Erica was incredible. I tied her up on the line for 20 minutes and she was a pleasure to talk to and had all the info I could want without having to look it up. I could tell she knew her shit. Very nice woman, and Im very impressed with their shipping policies. Free 2nd day air for orders over $200? Are you serious?? Free returns?? Im going online right now to buy a 7D and 7.5D and just return the one that doesnt fit. No risk and I get them super fast. :D

code probably didn't work. They have a discount club. You need to buy a tshirt or something and you get 10% off all orders after that.

The code worked!! Very suprised/happy. Saved $40 per pair, though it doesnt matter because Im only keeping one, so $40 total saved. Nice! How is icewarehouse not losing a ton of money on these discounts and the free 2nd day air shipping?

That's incorrect. The difference between full sizes is around 5/16".

Exactly. A half size is about a sixth of an inch. And an EE skate compared to a D is about 2/5ths of an inch in width. I think it's more important to have the width dead on and be quarter inch off length wise than the other way around...

Is it good to have the skates snug enough in the foot that when you lace them up you dont really have to tighten it at all at the foot, but just pull the laces snug and only crank down at the ankle?

Sounds like that might be a bit snug, considering that your foot will spread a bit after you skate for a while. Try standing in them for 15-20 minutes and make sure they don't become tight.

Well it appears the 7D is the one that fits. JUST barely passes the pencil over the top of the foot test. VERY snug throughout but not uncomfortably so. I think its the one! Only problem is a little pain at the ankles where the edge of the tongue gets in between my ankle bone and the padding. The edge there puts pressure on the tendon/bone and hurts. I trimmed the felt a tiny bit and it seemed to help.

EDIT: Ended up going with the 7.5D. The 7s were just too short, my toes were crunched up against the cap when standing. The 7.5 has just enough room for the toes to not get crunched up, but I can still barely feel the end of the toe cap when standing. A little more room in the ankle area than the 7s but thats ok. Still feels good!
