Terrible bruises on ankles from mission lieutenants!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I just got Mission Lieutenants from hockeymonkey. They were on clearance, I think $250 off the regular price so I figured they were worth it. I got size 9.5 EE. The length fits, and EE is good as I have wide feet. However, after skating on them two consecutive nights I have the worst bruises on the inside and outsides of both of my ankles. The skates rubbed up against my ankle bones so hard that there is literally no skin left and I can see just the white bone. It has been 2 weeks and my ankles have now scabbed up but I cannot put my skates back on without feeling terrible pain on those bruises. I had the skates baked before wearing them and they felt fine before skating around. Does anyone have any advice for how to prevent your ankle bones from getting awful cuts from rubbing?

The skate could be too stiff for you maybe? What skates have you used previously? Every person that I've played with who have used these skates have complained about ankle pain as well.

You can put some band aids on the area which should prevent rubbing on the skin. Ive also heard of using stockings under the socks being very useful. I used the band aids until i finally broke them in. Once you break them in they are some of the best skates ive ever used

I guess I am glad that I am not the only one that has experienced this. I had a pair of CCMs for 3 years that never gave me ankle pain and before that I had a pair of missions for 4 years but I was really young then so my feet had not fully grown. I looked at some lower-end Missions at a local sports store today and saw that the interior looks very similar to the Lieutenants so maybe my feet just are not made for Lieutenants; on the other hand, it could just be that these skates were discontinued for the ankle issues it creates.

I am going to try putting on bandaids once my scars heal to the point that putting the skates on does not irritate them causing pain. I also have a thin pair of tall socks that I could wear under my regular thicker socks. Not sure about wearing stockings though!? I did love the feel of the skates for the first 5 minutes I wore them--they felt a thousand times better than my Vector 06's.

dont try bandaids because they wont stay on. try the ezeefit ankle booties. follow link:

had these skates and had the same exact problem. wound up selling them and purchased the commander blacks and the difference was amazing. i don't know what was wrong with the lieutenants, but i have heard the same complaints from many others.

Those horrible skates did the same thing to me, worst bone bruises I ever had. I found that my ankle bones did not line up properly with the indents, and as a result, I was running out of cushioning and hitting the hard boot. What I found was that I needed a slight heel lift, so what I did was cut up some dr sholes and put a small piece under the heel, and lifted it, and they were ok after that. I still have never found those skates to be very good, and moved to a pair of rbk 7k's which were a lot better for me. I really don't think it is a matter of stiffness, as my supreme one80 ice skates are as comfortable as pillows for me, but thats because my ankle bones line up with the indents where there is extra material. Take a good look at your skates and how your ankle bone imprints are lining up with the factory punchouts.

The '08 Boss skates killed my ankles. The Boss SE's feel like a cloud of awesome on my ankles. From now on I'm staying away from any Mission's without the indy-foam ankle pads. It's pretty much the best feature for comfort IMO.

I am glad I came on here, I was about to order the '08 Boss skates. What size of Boss SE's did you get, 1.5 or 2.0 sizes less than your shoe size? I do not have any local sports store that carries Mission skates that cost more than $200 so I cannot try them on before purchasing online. I do know, however, that if I do not get the right size from inlinewarehouse.com I can send them back as long as the tags are still on.

Wow, so many people have had problems with these! I think I am going to take the dive on some 2010 Missions so I can send them back for a refund if they do not fit well (although I will not be able to skate on them because that prevents full refunds at the inlinewarehouse).

I went a size and a half down from my shoe size. I wear 12 shoes and my Boss skates were 10.5. I probably would have liked an 11 better (size wise anyways) as the 10.5 had my toes just against the toecap, which technically is the ideal fit, but I like just a little more room.

Why are you buying missions at all? My mission skates were ok once I modified them, but they were never great, and never really fit my feet properly. I would try out a different brand. Try some RBK's or maybe some bauers. I have RBK 7k and bauer supreme 80's that are both comfortable for me. In fact if I was going to get into inline again, I would convert a pair of ice boots to inline skates, maybe take the chassis off the missions and get a good ice boot. A mid price ice boot is going to be as good if not better than a high end inline boot anyhow. Personally I think inline skates are a ripoff. For instance compare a rbk 7k inline skate to an ice skate, and they are about the same price. Best setup I can think of now would be a nice ice boot with a set of those sprung chassis or whatever.

Bake them - it's the only way around it.

If you cant get to a skate bake oven, use a fan assisted oven at home.

I had the exact same problem, couldn't skate for a few weeks because of the pain. I let myself heal up, baked them and after a couple of sessions post-bake they felt great.

I agree they are a very stiff boot compared to my ancient missions (control series!) but once they fit well, they are a great skate - for me they are very fast.
