How protective should shins/elbows be?

I just have a quick question to you guys. I'm getting into a bit of roller hockey now, but being a goalie, I don't know anything about player gear. My friend is offering to let me use his Bauer Vapor Select II shin pads and Easton 400 elbows. Now my question is, how much protection to I really need? My understanding is that these two pieces of equipment aren't close to the top of the line stuff. Will I really notice it/should I just go out and buy new stuff? They look like they are decent, but I'm worried that they wont be sufficient in some way. I'll probably play once or twice a week, but nothing to heavy. Thanks for any advice you guys can offer

I think you'll be fine. I use the "cheaper" stuff for shin and elbows and my protection level feels very good. The only difference between most is the durability and features like lining and straps.

As long as it fits you well, you should be protected.

Heck, some of the pros even use lower end protection and they get by fine. Unless you're facing 95 mph slap shots, you should be fine with what you have.

Having played many years of both inline and ice, I look for different types of equipment for the two. For inline, I tend to buy lower end equipment. The lighter puck, lack of sharp blades, and reduced body contact allow me to get away with less protection, and wear something a bit lighter, which is important since many rinks can be 75+ degrees.

I would be sure to wear good gloves... lots of stick work in inline.

You should feel comfortable falling onto your elbows and knees while wearing them. If you are confident that they have enough protection to prevent injury should you fall directly on those body parts, they are good enough to use. If the pads are sturdy enough to protect you should you fall, they will be more than enough to protect you from an inline puck.
