adding foam to skates to provide better ankle lock

Recommended Posts

A little background story...

I was at the local rink's hockey shop to get my skates sharpened and the sharpener noticed that there was significant wear in the liner around the ankle areas. He was apt to point out it was probably due to my narrow ankles and heel sliding around and suggested that I have him add more foam to it. He explained that the process involves cutting the stitching at the top of the boot and stuffing foam until it packs nicely around my ankles.

My question is: Is it worth it after the skate has already been broken in and is it safe? The part that irks me is when the sharpener said the opening where he stuffs foam in would be glued back together.

Plus, he was charging $80.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

If it ain't broke dont' fix it i.e. are they comfortable? Either way, if he tries to sell you undercoating, don't buy it.

thanks for the replies!

Yeah, I figured he was trying to sell me something I didn't need.

I have a pair of one75's and lately they've been feeling loose, probably due to wear and tear. I had to crank on the laces quite a bit but that has only made my skating worse and my feet hurt.

I think I'll hold off on the foam and try my superfeet again. Maybe taking up volume in the skate might alleviate the loose feeling.

Just curious who this guy is. He wouldn't happen to be Arthur from 8 rinks by any chance?

Also, you have one75 skates. Isn't it possible to just rebake them and mold the material closer to your foot to re-lock it into place?

Just wondering why shouldn't we buy the undercoating?

Not to point any fingers or be unprofessional, but it was an older employee at the 8rinks hockey shop. It made a lot of sense when he explained it.

haha doesn't undercoating always sound good in theory?

Update on the superfeet though. I put them back in and didn't tighten the laces as much and it seems to have alleviated the problem. I normally like my laces tight to maximize energy transfer but I'll take what I can get. The U+ cl's look mighty tempting....but I digress.

Definitely sounds like Arty to me. I've had him work on my last two pairs of skates (One90's and One95's). I liked the work he did. It gives you a nice ankle and heel lock.
