Lightweight Low-Bulk Pants for Ice

Recommended Posts

I have done a search and read some posts on pants recommendations, but nothing much has been talked about lately regarding some of the newer gear available. I am wondering if you guys could give some insight. I'm currently wearing CCM V08 LE's from maybe 2 years ago. They aren't terrible pants, but they are so bulky around the waist, and especially lower back, that I feel like my mobility is decreased. I only play non-check mens league and pickup, so maximum protection is not of utmost importance. I guess I'm looking for suggestions, with the most important features being a tie between lightweight and low-bulk.

I should probably also mention that I am pretty average size, 5'11", 180 lbs, so I pretty much fit into anything size large.

Thanks in advance.

Try from the 2010 line-up, make sure its 2010 the 2009 is alot different, the Reebok 7k's and CCM U+ fit 07. When I was buying pants i was looking for the same criteria as you. I ened up narrowing it down to those to chooses and decided to go with the CCM's, both very light and not bulky at all, but still offer good protection.

I switched from pants to a girdle/shell and noticed a big difference in terms of mobility. They girdle/shell setup feels a lot lighter, too. I did switch from a fairly heavy, bulky pant, though.

What girdle/shell combo are you using? I'm thinking about making the switch to that setup, but don't know if I want to bother making any adjustments to a new setup.

I recently tried on some Bauer girdles and found that they were all a little long in the leg. Can anyone recommend a girdle that might be a little shorter?

I would agree that the lightest combination is the gridle/shell option. Ebay is a great place to scope pro stock shells too!

I have heard good things about the new Easton Synergy, but have not used them myself. I used the original synergy, but the materials made them breakdown very fast (holes formed quickly). Supposedly that problem was addressed. JR raves about his One95 girdle...that didn't work for me. I also would want to try the Eagle X95 girdle if I was looking for one. I used the original Bauer ol school girdle for a while...but now over the last few years living in the CCM MHP520s pro stocks.

i highly recommend for the x60 girdle. very light and mobile. the lower back spine pad thinger is adjustable to fit right up against you or more loosely.

That's so funny. I have the exact same pants, and was going to make the exact same thread. I absolutely HATE my V08's, they're too bulky at the top, they're HORRIBLE quality and the only plus is that they "look cool". I'm switching back to my old Tacklas for now.

haha, yeah. horrible quality. like i said, i just play mens league and pickup and mine are falling apart after less than a year. my pants would last longer back when I played competitive college hockey. but the biggest issue for me is the bulk. the waist and lower back padding is so big that i feel like i can't bend enough.

and for what it's worth, mine don't make me look very cool. they are so big, they make my ass look enormous. of course i don't care what they look like as long as they function the way i want.

Yep, exact same problem here. Maybe both you and I got pairs that were sitting around for years or something. I'm def considering the RBK 9K since it's a 2 piece but will also be looking at Easton/Bauer/Warrior pants. Will never again buy a CCM pant.

i'm gonna give my old ones a shot. The only reason I purchased new pants (the CCM's) was b/c the Tackla's got a tear on the thigh. They're in good shape but felt really "saggy" on me after I lost weight. I've lost even more weight since then so we'll see.

I'm using a CCM Pro Girdle (which I think is a retail model, not a pro stock from '08, or thereabouts). If I had a "do-over" I'd buy a different girdle. Mine's ripping a little. It has only seen about a year of beer-league use. Great combination of lightness and mobility, though. I'd just get a different high-end girdle. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any current girdles from personal experience. I wish I made the switch to a girdle/shell setup years ago.

I had similar objectives, so i switched to vapor 40(xxxx) girdle. Was looking for good lower back spine and tail bone protection.

This pants has all that plus great mobility,

It sounds like a lot of players seem to prefer the girdle/shell setup. i may end up going this route. this may be a dumb question, but in terms of actually putting your gear on with a girdle, what is typical? right now, i use a shock doc compression short with built in garter clips for my socks. would I continue to use this, then pull the girdle over my shins w/socks on already, or do the girdles have a sock attachment?

i probably sound like a total rookie, but i've just never used a girdle, and I've actually rarely played on a team with anyone who does.

I can't speak for the new Reebok line, but I had a bad experience with the original 9K pant a few years ago ('08 maybe). the shell durability was awful! it completely shredded in several different places. also, the velcro closures on the zippered thighs completely detached from the nylon. the pants took some getting used to...eventually they were pretty comfortable. too bad durability was so bad. maybe the new line is better.

i never understood why they didn't market a replacement shell for the original 9K pants. if so, i may not even be looking to buy new pants right now.

One of the guys at the rink last night had a Warrior shell and says it's incredibly durable and comfortable.. I may start looking at that one.
