soulchoice 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2010 Hey guys, thought I would throw a question out there for all of you. I am planning a trip right now(depending on cost) to head to Hong Kong, Thailand and Beijing between October 26th and November 8th. I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to play some hockey while in these areas. I do know there is a tournament in Bangkok on the 27th of October, so also, was wondering what the skill level is like and if they accept individual players to play on a team for the tourney. Also, what is the skill level of mens leagues(beerleagues) in HK, Beijing or Thailand. Any insight is appreciated. If you may ask, I like to travel with my gear wherever I go, as I like to play wherever I can, just to say that "I played hockey in that country!"Thanks guys/gals. nickerjones 8 Report post Posted October 15, 2010 I will get some more info on Thailand for you. We have a husband and wife combo on my team here in Oklahoma. She is from Thailand and that is where she started playing hockey. I thought it was pretty cool that there was hockey over there!
K9 Unit 1 Report post Posted October 15, 2010 in my 10 years of living in hk i have not seen any type of beer leagues, equipment is way to expensive there, renting the rink would be too expensive coz there's only 3-4 rinks in big malls in hk and their used for public skating, only hockey i know about is the hk national team which my friend was on and they weren't very good they did win some asian hockey tourney before if i remember righthowever i havent been back there in close to 4 years now so it might have changed
raganblink 82 Report post Posted October 15, 2010 Top end players equal out to an nahl quality. Skill for average player though is a lot less. Probably bad b league. Stuff is uber expensive. Most gear that is top end here is like twice as much. A Chinese team is traveling around my area, and this one mom spent 1200 to get stuff for her kid and she thought that was really really cheap. Now they're buying all our low end skates and taking them home to sell I'm guessing.
NextBobbyOrr 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2010 Well this isn't exactly your given places, but it's relatively close. If you go to the Philippines, the only rink I know is there is at the SM Mall of Asia. Haven't actually skated in it, but I do know it's olympic sized and I think theres at least 4 teams... AIREAYE 248 Report post Posted October 16, 2010 I'm quite interested in this too, being Chinese-born and Canadian-bred, playing hockey back in my mother nation would def be a top experience on my bucket list :P For OP, check over at HFBoards, they have some threads about Asian hockey. Hockey is expensive in HK for sure. As well, it looks like you are traveling to asian from oct 26th - nov 8? In my honest opinion, for that short period of time, it's not even worth dragging around your equipment to asia. I would just go there and enjoy the night life. There is hockey out here, still at its nascent stages in Macau, Phillipines, India but in in some countries it is pretty well organized: Taiwan (1,500), Hong Kong (1,500), Thailand (200), Malaysia (150), China (2-3,000)- if you bring gear you will get ice. The standard is good enough to satisfy 99% of the guys on these boards, these countries have a bunch of expats who've played Jnr A/B and some semi professional, they have established leagues for going on 10 years so. If anyone is planning to come out or want more information you can email me directly on: skateproasia@yahoo.com and I'll try to hook you up.Regarding gear prices it depends on the country and their import duties etc, in most places prices are similar to Canada more than US for current product.
