Think I twisted my Knee

Recommended Posts

Hey guys - just a quick update (might help someone else in the future so keeping this thread as a bit of a log)

Went to another doc (my regular GP) and he's convinced it's an MCL sprain, not a full rupture.

I'm on anti-inflammatory pills and I have phisio in a couple of weeks, who may refer me for scans etc.

The pills make it feel good, but I'm still taking it easy and not doing anything at all with that knee - just a light bit of walking.

Until then, i'm keeping close to hockey by helping the local new starters and young kids by teaching them to pass, skate, shoot etc. It's not exactly fun (well it can be rewarding) but i'm still close to it this way.

The critical turning point for any minor knee injury, and this is luckily minor, is rest. I've got a genetic malformation on the inside of my right knee, so I know a little about the MCL. What you described, feeling fine walking one night and then being sore/pained the next day is a classic sprain, I've done it before, a couple times. One key thing to remember is that after it heals, you'll be left with substantially less strength so before you get back on the ice or do ANYTHING strenuous, you need to spend 10-14 days building the strength back in the gym/pool/etc and do so conservatively.

cheers gxc - it's nice to know that I'll most likely be skating again.

I'll take that advice and hopefully the phisio will advise the same thing. I don't mid waiting longer if it means I can play again.

I'm only walking on it to get to work and out and about - but i do as little as possible. Do you think that's ok?

Are there any particular exercises that you were given?

Great to hear it's only a sprain! Just keep off of it until you're cleared to go. The people at physical therapy should give you some exercises to do and before you know it you'll be ready to go. Good luck!

Just an update

Knee feels 97% fixed! Not been to phisio yet and it feels great.

I think i'll be ready to skate again in a month or so. I could probably skate OK now but I thought i'd give it another month to make sure it's all healed.

Guess I got lucky.

Good choice to wait til its completely healed. I had a mild sprain awhile ago which occurred during a February, kept playing with a brace (I played in cash tournaments so there was incentive to play) and tried my hardest to not land on it, then fell right on it/re-injured mid-game in April - didn't completely feel normal until August!!

Once you get back to skating, I suggest purposely landing on both of your knees in pre-game skate or practice just to get over the mental hurdle of making sure its okay. I kept the brace for awhile in the fall after the injury but ended up not using it anymore after a month of an injury free knee. :)

Not to thread jack or anything, but I just sprained my mcl as well. Grade 2. Sav, how are you feeling know? And how long exactly did you take off. The doc told me 3-6 weeks, but since my team isn't doing any Christmas tournaments, I'm taking full time off to be safe. For anybody who's had any sort of knee injury, what kind of excercises did you guys do while injured? I want to use this as an oppourtunity to get stronger so I don't fall behind when I get back on the ice.
