Breaking x-40 OPS

Recommended Posts

So I recently bought a 3 pack of x-40 OPS and have gone through them in about 2 months! All have broken at the shaft about 1/4 to 1/3 up from the blade. Some details I'm 220 pounds play "d" and take quite a few slapshots, I was using 102 flex cut down slightly to be ~110 flex. Being that all broke in virtually the same spot, during a shot do you think the breakage has to do with the lower flexpoint of the intelli-sense multi flex point technolgy in the vapor line of sticks?

I hate that this is happening as I really like the vapor sticks when they are in one piece. I bought a one95 to try, but before skating with it already dont like the more square shaft feel. Does anyone think the traditional flex point of the supreme stick will be a better fit for my style of play, or should I look into something else?

You dont say how experienced of a player you are. But if you have not been playing forever, or if your technique is not perfect, perhaps the cause is related to what was the cause for my sticks breaking (taking too much ice), see in the this previous thread

Well I'm 29 years old and played AA travel and varsity hockey in high school, I took a long time off and started playing again a couple years ago. I don't want to discount the fact that it could be me, but my shot hasn't really changed and I have never broken the shaft of any stick taking shots until these. Just the fact that these sticks have been breaking in the exact same spot under the same conditions led me to believe there was a pattern there.

i broke an x:40 at the lower part of the shaft in around a month . I think the x:40 just breaks a bit too easily.

Have you used any of the higher end vapors for comparison X-50 or X-60?

I really like the performance of the stick, and wish I didn't have to make a switch but they are just not holding up for me at all...

Its not likeley but it could be the stick because my friend broke his a week ago in the same spot.

Well with me braking 3 and the other two replies to the thread all breaking in the same spot, it definitely indicates a bit of a trend. I think it may be fair to assume there is something with the design that makes the lower portion of the shaft a weak point on the vapor sticks.

If anyone else has had a similar (or different) experience with the vapor sticks please chime in.

I fix sticks for a living, prob 20 Vapors a week. Most break in this area. X60's on down the line. Once, I was repairing two of them at the same time. After I was done sanding off the paint, I got confused as to which bottom went on which stick, they were both broken in the exact same spot. In addition, the jagged edges of the breaks were identical on both sticks. This has to be a defect, what are the odds of a identical break like that occurring. Sticks were different flex's and had different owners. Just too much of a coincidence.

I don't know if I would say defect, probably just a compromise in design that had to be made in order to achieve some other function. I think most people are aware that durability and Vapor sticks are generally not hand-in-hand.

the reason why my X:40 broke was cause it was jammed hard between the boards and my ribs. I'm glad the stick broke or it would've been my ribs instead LOL

That has been my assumption that there is something in the design that doesn't make the stick a good match for how I play. While I wasn't 100% aware that vapor and durability didn't go hand in hand, I am now indeed aware.

Hopefully I can get used to the boxier shaft of the Supreme series sticks and I find they perform as well as the vapors aside from the durability issues.

Now I know I'll stay away from Vapor sticks, damn. Horror stories

If someone starts a thread asking people to relate their broken One95s or broken ____ sticks, you'll get similar stories. Will you stay away from those sticks then?

Yeah, this is not the assumption I wanted everyone to come to, as I just think the stick is not a good fit for me heavy guy, lots of slapshots etc. Its a great stick when it is in one piece, I'm just having a hard time keeping them that way for very long. This doesn't mean a lighter different style player couldn't be happy with the vapor for a long period of time.

All sticks, all brands will break. Some, because of their construction and materials, will break easier. It sounds like you need a stick with carbon/kevlar, instead of the X40 fibreglass stick. I've found the Easton ST is a very good stick for durability, outlasting most other brands/models.

actually, fibreglass sticks are more durable than carbon. Oh, and the X;40 is a mostly carbon-material stick
