Girdle suggestions - good protection but cool

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been playing for a few years with a Mission Thorax Advantage girdle (the black and orange one), and I'm now getting fed up of these massive bruises on my thighs. I play D, for info.

The Thorax offers good protection against hits and falls, granted, and it's light and unobtrusive, but it's really close to useless against hard slaps on the outside of the thighs (where they seem to land most of the time on me). You get one of these and you're diminished for the rest of the game, can't stretch properly and can't sleep on one side for a few nights.

Key point on top of it: something breathable as I overheat too much.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure how much more breathable one would be to the next, but I was very happy with my Bauer MBP8 girdle until its inadequate size became too much of an issue. I've since switched to a Tackla girdle I purchased a few years ago and never wore. The Tackla's padding is more substantial in every aspect, the only difficulty I had was getting acclimated to the higher ab, hip and back padding.

I have the newer/current model, the blue one, and I don't think that would ever happen to me. There's one unprotected spot where the pads meet, but you just have to be very unlucky to get hit there.

We're talking about slapshots to the thigh right? Not slapped with a stick or something?

To me it sounds like the newer Mission models offer better protection so you might want to look into that. Also, I hear the reeboks are nice...but the higher end models like 7k and 9k.

I'm very happy with my 2010 model thorax flow girdle (the red one). Unless you're playing in a full contact league or plan to dive in front of slapshots on a regular basis it's fine. If you are like me and play in rec leagues and drop ins where most of the contact is incidental, the thorax girdle is one of the best you can buy.

May I recommend a nice pair of Tackla ice hockey pants? maybe that'd solve your problem, but it's awful bulky for roller hockey.

i wear tackla air 9000 pants for ice. i tried them for a roller game once (indoors and air conditioning). they were hot as hell.

I was kinda joking, I've worn ice pants for inline as well and it's pretty awful, but IMO if you really need a higher level of protection, ice pants are the best way to go. Maybe find some molded plastic (PVC pipe) cut it into pieces and stitch it onto your girdle. I've certainly seen crazier things done w hockey gear.

Do you wear compression pants under your girdles? Its really great for heat management. As for the protection I don't think you'll find something more protective without sacrificing breath-ability. Perhaps look at Reebok girdles or maybe even an ice girdle like the supreme.
