I think I need a whippier stick

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, im new here but I have been a long time reader and enjoy how you guys help everyone. But now I need some help! I took a hard slash on my right wrist (bottom hand since I shoot right) and its been getting sore after I play. Im using a x:60 87 flex pm9 curve and ive been shooting everything high recently. Im pretty sure that it is because im not putting my weight into the stick fully and properly loading it because of my wrist. I just feel that the blade isn't cupping and springing but just spinning the blade off. Another thing is that I feel that I need to whip my wrists over more with a higher flex. I am considering getting a Totalone in a 77 flex and a deeper curve. I was thinking either a p88 or p14.

So my real question is: does a lower flex really help shoot lower? I know that it would be easier on my wrist, but if it would cause me to launch my shots over the net ill reconsider it.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I second that...stiffer sticks I find I'm shooting lower because I can pick corners with low wristers.

If anything a whippier stick would have you shooting higher. Also not confident a deeper curve will help you keep it low vs. the pm9.

Was your current setup working well for you before your injury? If so, you might just need a little time to heal so that you can get back to your usual form.

Do you think that wrapping/taping your wrist might add a little support until it feels better? I've never tried it, but have seen plenty of guys do it.

When I use a p88, I don't have difficulty keeping shots low since the face isn't as open as a lot of other patterns.

I find that a stiffer stick tends to keep my shots lower with the same blade.

I shot with a 102 flex one95 pm9 and shot slower and seemed to flutter them over the net. I got a 77 flex one95 and seemed to be able to control trajectory on my quick shots better. I broke it and Bauer sent me my x:60. Even before my hurt wrist i would feel the kick of the stick and the puck just spins off. I feel I need to drop the puck way back and cup it before I try to take a hard wrister more than a lower flex. Ive shot with my friends old 50 flex stick and i was shooting very low. Sometimes the puck wouldn't even come off the ground. This is what I base my reasoning on. Although I aknowledge that it can be wrong I just thought I should explain myself better.

It's not the stick, it's your technique that's in need of help. Flutter pucks come from not rolling heel to toe and not turning the blade over enough.

I had a nasty wrist injury on my bottom hand that would flare up when shooting. First I let it rest for a week and then used one of these wraps. The thumb loop is nice because it allows you to get a nice tight wrap. It will fit under your glove without being uncomfortable or causing issues handling your stick.
