Water damage to helmet?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I just have a quick question. Every once in a while my dad and I soak my hockey equipment in the bathtub with a little detergent. My dad happened to put my helmet in with the rest of the equipment, I was just wondering whether the exposure to so much water would damage my helmet? Specifically the foam (pretty sure the plastic shell wouldn't be affected :P)

PS My helmet is a CCM V10, just adding this in case EPP is affected differently than a VN liner

I dont have an answer for you, but I'm curious... how long does that take to dry? I only play pickup twice a week and I still don't think I could get away with soaking my equipment like that.

My helmets got a nice heavy dusting thanks to some remodeling being done in my house so I rinsed them off with the hose attachment in my kitchen sink. So far no damage and it dried fairly quickly. I took a paper towel to it so that sped up the process, but I played my game about an hour after doing it and didn't notice a drop of water. I've heard of people sticking the helmets in the dishwasher, so I think under the right conditions it's completely doable.

With that said, I had an older helmet sit out in the rain for a few weeks and I noticed one of the screws that holds up the cage was beginning to rust.

FYI, I have VN liner helmets but both kinds of liners are supposed to be handle heavy sweat.

I believe rusting of the metal parts would be the only ill effect from the soaking, maybe some of the pads. The main structure of the helmet should be OK, shell and EPP liner. I used to sell cycling equipment and most bike helmets are EPP and we found sweat did more damage than regular tap water. Some sweat is so acicic that it would cause paint to peel on the bike and they would start to rust.

My old helmet was exposed to water, and the only problem I encountered was the rusting of the screws. Other than that, the helmet was fine to use. I actually still use it on ocassion (since this is my only white helmet).

You could also think of it this way, the same stuff is designed to hold ice and cold beverages.
