Helmet Advice: 6k vs. v10

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so I've read the individual reviews that I can find on both helmets and still can't decide. Both seem to fit my head really well and was just wondering if anyone has tried both and had any comments on ventilation as I am a sweater, and durability or anything else that would seem relevant. If there is already a thread on this that I missed I apologize in advance.

If you tried them on and u think both fit well, they don't fit well. Two different shapes, the v10 is narrower and the 6k is more round. I had both of these helmets, my head grew out of v10, and only helmet that fits me is 6k. Same foam on inside they are made by same company. Also same durability, etc. Great helmets.

I wear a 6k right now, and I have a lot less of a problem with sweat running into my face than I do with my Bauer 5100. Can't comment on the v10 though

interesting, i did the complete opposite and found the complete opposite. i had sweat running down my face like crazy with my 6k and not nearly as bad with my 5100. the 6k fit my head just a touch better and was a bit more comfortable, but the gel pads started sliding around on me after barely a season of use.

The RBKs seem to have a much softer and more pliable shell than the Vectors. I've owned 8k and V08 and love the V08, neither model you're looking at, but that's just my preference.

Wore the Reebok 8K (very similar to the 6K) and liked the feel, but eventually switched to the Cascade M11 after a couple of collisions knocked my head to the ice. A bit heavier, but definitely feels more protective. I know some guys have been picky about the look (much improved after Messier got involved), but I see NHLers like Brett Burns from the Wild returning from concussion wearing the M11, so I have to believe it's a darn good product.

I also sweat a bit, so I wear an Under Armour scalp cover (like a lot of football players wear). Keeps the sweat totally under control. Both the Reebok 8K and the Cascade M11 vent pretty well.

No experience with the V10 ...

Burnzie switched back to a CCM... He was getting headaches wearing the M11... I think the Wild (and some other NHL teams) have taken to a loose "policy" that if a player returns from a concussion that they have to give the M11 a try... Every Wild player that has returned from a concussion has done so for at least one game (Sykora and Burns last year, Bouchard this year).

It may not be a "policy" so to speak, but a strong suggestion. Some players have stuck with them (like Bouchard so far), some switched right away (Sykora went back to a 5100 the next game) and some give up after a while (like Burnzie switching back to CCM recently).

The M11 definitely has a tighter fit, no doubt about it. So many players prefer the looser fit, at all levels, which is contrary to how any helmet is supposed to fit. It took me a few games to get used to it, but wearing the scalp cover helped. No headaches at all. Now I'm seeing some local youth and high school teams making the switch to the M11. Harvard and a number of other colleges are also wearing it.

I see Burns was removed from the M11 site after switching away. Bouchard and Willie Mitchell from LA are listed as wearing it, and both suffered serious concussions, so you may be right that teams are mandating it's use in this situation, at least for a certain period of time. After the initial period of adjustment, I don't even think about it anymore.
