Ever just "get it" ?

Recommended Posts

My problem with "getting it" is figuring out exactly what I did so I can "get it" again *L*

It's the same problem with golfing. If I hit a good drive....someone says "Nice shot"...I don't say "thanks" I say "Can you tell me what I did?"

Today I finally got it when doing boards and back at practice. I've been working on acceleration and realized to push down harder before my skate even touches back on the ice its sort of hard to explain but I finally "got it".

My main "got it" moment had to do with being young and foolish. A shop in Raleigh named Cool Sports use to sell Hurricanes pro stock stuff. When I was 13-14 years old I bough a Glen Wesley Innovative 1100 shaft from them. Back then everyone on my team would always try to get the stiffest sticks they could find because that was the cool thing to do. That Inno 1100 was incredibly too stiff for me, but I didn't realize that at that point in time. To get anything on my shots I had to use a huge curve like a Yzerman curve. Using that setup I just couldn't do anything on the ice. After a while I asked my dad if I could get a Sherwood 7000 stick with a Leclair curve. The next time I had a practice I instantly realized how dumb I had been to use the Inno 1100. With the lower stiffness of the Sherwood 7000 and the smaller Leclair curve all of my forehand shots improved significantly, I could stick handle better, and I discovered that backhands were a possibility. I can trace much of my positive development as a hockey player to the purchase of that Sherwood stick since it made me realize that the equipment I buy should be purchased because it is the better choice for my needs, and not because my friends thought it was cool.

10 years (and 120 lbs) later I still find that pro stock Inno 1100 to be too stiff.

this is exactly why I love hockey. It is a never ending pursuit of mastering numerous skills. Never ending!

yup, it will never end for me, unless you can make me live another two or three life times.

I think that sometime when I play I over think things. When I play games I tend to over think more. When its just pickup I stop and think "How the hell did I just do that?" but it just happened. So yeah I have had it just click!

After spending the last several free skate sessions focusing on outside edge work I'm close to getting it. Amazing the difference it makes to how your edges feel when you can truly feel and trust what's happening when you're on the outside edge. A few more sessions and I should have this engrained into my skating.
