Pain on edge side of foot, fit problem or pronation?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I have a question about skate fit and I was hoping I could get some opinions before I head into my LHS tonight for another fit.

I have a pair Easton Synergy EQ5 in 8.5D. I've been on them for a month, skating three times a week or so. But lately I've been getting pain on the outside edges of my feet. It starts a few cm's down from my pinky, all the way to a few cms from the heel. It's aprticularly bad around the outside edge of the arch area. It feels almost like I'm skating on the side or edge of my foot, rather than on the sole of my foot. So, if I stop, it feels like the edge of my foot is taking all the weight and the pain flares up.

I had the skates stretched overnight, which helped the front part, but only for a few skates. The edge of the foot around the arch are was still in pain. I could get them punched, but I'm wondering if this is really the problem? Is this a textbook case of a pair of skates being to narrow? Or could it be that I'm actually skating on the sides of my feet instead of on the soles? I have superfeet in them, which helps me put a bit more pressure on the soles, but it still feels like I'm skating on the edges of my feet.

I went in on the weekend and tried the Bauer line again, and we found that 8.5EE fit better, but my toes don't brush the toecap. 7.5EE and my pinky is crushed a little on the side of the toecap. They don't have 8EE anywhere in my price range (they have them in TotalOnes... hah.). They sent emails to other stores, no-one has 8EE.

So I'd like some advice -- do I get the 8.5EE Bauers, even though they don't fit the way everyone says they should (toes brushing the toe cap)? They feel fine otherwise. Although, who knows -- the Eastons seemed fine in the store, it was only after skating that the pain started.

Thanks, I'd appreciate any ideas.

Are you flat footed by any chance? I've had the same problem as you described. I found strengthening ankles a way to help alleviate feet pain. Wobble board is a good place to start. I don't think theres a quick fix to it.

As for the skates, I suggest you ask them to order a pair of 8EE for you, theres quite a difference even when you go up half a size, its not worth the risk to injury your feet just for the convenience. If they refuse to then you can just order online, IW has a great return policy.

You could punch them out I did that with my goalie skates and it worked but I think you should get the 8EE skates, they can order it for you. Don't buy skates that don't fit you will only regret it.

your foot pain could (i'm just guessing here) be either a stress fracture on the outside of your foot or you could have plantar fasciitis. i have it and it does effect me on the outside edge of my foot. so getting new skates may not help you in getting rid of your foot pain. just something to think about.
