Youth Skate hollow

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on when to start playin with kids hollows. My son has been skating on a 3/8 for about 4 years now, he is a second year squirt now and weighs about 65 lbs. I was just wondering if it would be worth it at this time to maybe go up to a 7/16?. I think 1/2 may be a big jump. he is good on his edges, both insides and outsides on both skates. Maybe just do it and not tell him and see if anything happens? Thanks in advance for any advice you guys can give.

Sorry, I palced this in the wrong section. Mods please move to correct section if necessary.

my son is 8, ~ 55lb I'd guess and have been skating on 7/16 for over a year

he's a strong skater so personal skating abilities matter more then the weight (same way it applies to adult skater & ability to use edges)

I'd say definitely give 7/16 a go & stick to 1/16 jumps, 1/8 of a jump is too much besides what's the point

I'd not tell him just to remove any potential phychological aspects of the change - sometimes our minds play tricks on us you know :)

My daughter is 9, weighs about 50# and has been skating since she was 5. She is on 3/4" and has all of the edge she needs. Most of ice around SW PA is fairly hard with ice temps ranging from 12 to 17 degrees and probably averages ~15 based on the responses I've gotten when I asked. It really depends on skating style, technique, proficiency, and "feel". I agree with not telling him and just backing off in 1/16" increment every 3 or 4 sharpenings (to give him a chance to get used to the shallower hollow before going further) while watching his skating pretty closely. I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't work him down to nearly 3\4".
