Ankle issues with Bauer Supreme One60s

Recommended Posts

Let me start by saying I looked around for help with this issue and cant find anything anywhere on the site.

I've been having this issue with my skates (Bauer Supreme One60 LE, late 2010 model) where after a session the top of my inside ankle would be extremely swollen and tender, and touching the area would be extremely painful, eventually it hurt to just put the skate on. The pain didnt get unbearable until about 6 or 7 games in the skates.

I went to a orthopedic, he took x-rays and said nothing was wrong with the bone but he thinks the nerve/tendon that runs over the ankle was irritated, gave me a cortisone shot but it didnt do anything. I havent skated for about 2 months now (going through withdrawal), tried the skates back on, and it still causes some discomfort. The pain seems to be right where the tongue rests on my ankle, which also seems to be very close to the 3rd eyelet from the top.

I'm thinking its either something with the tongue, or the depth of the skate. I was previously skating in Vapor x:15s for about a year, and never had this issue, the reason I switched was that the the forefoot in the vapors were a little too narrow. Is there a difference in the depth between the Vapors and the Supremes?

Anyone have any ideas of what it could be? Should I try a different tongue? Maybe try to get the skates baked again? Or get them punched out?

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated, I just finished my first beer league season and I'm completely hooked, but this issue has had me sidelined since then.

Thanks!

I've been battling the same issue too and haven't found anything to help. I've been off the ice for nearly three months and today I tried my skates on to see if the pain had gone away, but it's still there. I did some searching around the internet for "bone bruise" and read that icing the injury can help, but there are situations where it takes nearly a year to heal. Pretty depressing as I took up the game about 9 months ago and know exactly how you're feeling.

-Thanks, Todd

I had the same thing a few years ago with the outside ankle, and learned that my skates were not deep enough. Once I changed skates to deeper ones, no more pain for me.

I'm seeing my doctor next week, but I had an idea about trying on some Easton skates as I had heard they come up a bit higher on the leg. I found a local shop that had a pair of S15's in my size. The boot was definitely higher up on my leg and the pain I previously felt was significantly reduced. It will be interesting to see what the doc says and where this leads.

I ordered one of thesebunga pads, and tomorrow Im going to try to skate with my old Vapors instead of the new Supremes to see if there is any difference.

If you look closely you'll see that I've got two bone growths that almost look like fingernails or teeth coming together. These don't hurt to the touch, but when laced up in my Graf's and due to the lower cut of the boot, this causes pain when my ankle turns inward. Hopefully the higher boot of the Easton S17's will help fix this problem, otherwise surgery is the most probable option.
