gionta vs hossa pro curve

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used both the Gionta and Hossa pro curve? I've seen pics of both by members here but not side by side. Are they similar in play except for the open toe on the Hossa? Also are they the same lie? Preferences? I'm currently using the Gionta but would like to try the Hossa when it comes out in the Warrior customizer.

I've only used the Hossa pro curve of the two (Base BC01), but did not like it at all, I found it to be a very, very difficult curve to use. Completely straight near the heel, then a big hook and crazy open at the toe, I had terrible accuracy with it on all shots, terrible slappers, and really no good shots in general except for quick release snappers in close off the inside foot, with a sort of "pick and fling" technique. Real unpredictable when passing too. Good for getting shots up quickly in close, and fun for puck handling (especially for toe drag type moves), but I just get WAY more power with more traditional mid or heel curves. Loved the lie/rocker, but otherwise it wasn't the curve for me. My shot is much, much, much better with a Drury, Sakic, Datsyuk, P88 or P106.

Your mileage may vary obviously, curves are basically 100% personal preference, and obviously Hossa does just fine with this thing, but it's a VERY unconventional curve, and I'm guessing a lot of people would have trouble getting the most out of it. I can only give you my personal experience, which is that I basically can't use it, the least usable curve for me personally. I gave it a good shoot too, 3 months or so and probably around 20 ice times.

I've used both but not at the same time. I am currently using the Gionta and I used to use the Hossa pro. I prefer the Gionta pattern much more. I, like ponder, had a difficult time with the curve for the same reasons he stated. I stopped using it awhile ago but have thought about giving it another try at some point. The very open toe was what messed me up mostly.

Edit: the Hossa pro that I used was BASE's version. The picture Warrior has looks like it might be a slightly larger curve, although it may be just because it a picture.

I'm going to be going with the Gionta again when the customizer is out. I'd suggest trying to find the Hossa blade and try it out that way instead of dropping that much cash on a stick and not like it.

Thanks for the feedback and the pics thus far. So I guess the Gionta feels better because less of an open toe. Is the open toe a difficult thing to adjust to? From the pics Silver571 posted, the rocker and the toe shape look awesome. I noticed Base sells the curve separately maybe I'll give it a try. I have a tapered shaft I could throw it into.
