Another problem for my young goaltending son

Recommended Posts

Hi I was hoping someone on here would be able to help me. My son has just tuned 6 and has extremely small feet. He would probably only need a size 11 skate. My problem is a two fold one. I know that the smallest goalie skate that most companies make are now a 13 and finding an older pair of 12's is very hard indeed.

But because of where we live the youngest team available for him to play is at the under 12 level. Some of the players he'll be playing against this year will be almost 13 by the end of the year and i dont want him taking one off the toes and breaking a toe, as some of these kids can really fire the puck

Is it possible to mount a smaller goal cowling on a pair of player skates.

Any help with this would be greatly appriaciated

Thanks in advance

Yes it is... I believe Law Goalie currently rides in that exact setup. Not sure though how well a smaller skate will fit into a bigger cowling, but nothing wrong with giving it the ol' college try.

I think it is definitely a possibility. I've read on goaliestore.com a couple instances of people who've tried putting a cowling on player skates. The big key is to find a cowling that fits/somewhere that will sell such a small replaceable cowling. So maybe its worth calling up your LHS to see what they have and go from there

You could certainly take a cowling off a size 13 and have them installed, there is no problem doing that other than cost. If you can't find donor skates, any CCM/RBK dealer could order you a pair. However, I don't recommend it. I think you are being overly cautious. There is a reason they don't make goal skates that small, the extra protection is just not needed at that age group. Most can't even lift the puck. If one were to "rip" a shot it would likely not be powerful enough to break a toe through a regular skate toecap. Plus, as long as he's wearing newer style pads that cover the toe caps, I think that adds all the extra protection that's needed. He'll be growing into goal skates soon enough so just hang tight and don't worry. He's fine.

thank you for all of your help and advice, I'll just leave him in his player skates untill he is close enough in size to be able to fit in goal skates. Your tips and insight is appreciated

Yes, Actually the old long radius goalies use to have are obsolete, no reason to have one. The shorter the radius of a player skate is generally great for maneuverability, it's just that player skates are too high off the ice slowing pad rotation.. Just a little longer radius in the rear is needed for stability pushes and recoveries, so a full 9 or 10' radius is not enough. I like the 20' in front and 32' in rear. Perfect combination. I tried shorter on my goal skates and too much instability. On a player skate though, not so bad.
